Promoting pollinator populations: Several county-wide projects support the health of pollinator species

According to the Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO) of the United Nations, three-fourths of crops that produce fruit or seeds for human consumption worldwide depend on pollinators, including bees, butterflies and other insects as well as some species of birds and even bats in some regions. The U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service reports that honey bees pollinate approximately $10 billion worth of crops in the United States each year, but only 20 percent of those crops are pollinated by domestic bees while the other 80 percent are pollinated by wild bees and other wildlife that provide essential ecosystem services.
