William Edward Pomeroy, 86, lovingly known as Bill, passed away peacefully on Friday May 1, 2026 at Aurora Medical Center in Marinette.
Bill was born on April 21, 1940 in Lakewood, to the late Jenny (Pomeroy) Atwood and Edward Pomeroy. After his father’s passing, his mother Jenny married Lloyd Atwood who became his stepfather. He had two sisters Janet (Pomeroy) Whitaker and Ruthie (Pomeroy) Brunette, and one brother Randy Atwood (Debbie).
He grew up in Crivitz and graduated from Crivitz High School in 1958. He met his future wife Jean (Czarapata) at a young age when she came to visit her grandma in Crivitz. Later, they reconnected at Popp’s Resort. He married the love of his life in Milwaukee on April 23, 1960. He was the loving father of three children Edward, Robert, and Deborah. He worked at American Motors in Milwaukee as a millwright until 1971, due to his understanding of mechanics that he learned from his father. When they moved back to Crivitz he took a job at Wisconsin Public Service working on the hydro dams as a hydro operator. He worked several positions in his time at Wisconsin Public Service including: being an operator at High Falls dam, then transitioning to a hydro maintenance worker, working on all of the dams on the Peshtigo River. He also spent some time at the Kewanee Nuclear Plant working on maintenance during the refueling shut downs. He was a maintenance supervisor for several years before returning to be a hydro maintenance crew leader. He worked for Wisconsin Public Service for 34 years until his retirement in 2005.
After retiring he enjoyed many years with his wife visiting new places including: Hawaii, Mackinac Island, California, and Las Vegas. They also enjoyed going to the local casinos for fun and they would go to polka dances in the area.
He was a member of St. Mary’s Catholic church and served as an altar boy for many years. He attended regularly until he was a fulltime caregiver to his wife through her years of illness. As a young man he helped build St. Mary’s church with his stepfather and family, Lloyd Atwood. He enjoyed fishing as he was taught by his father and did it often through the years, before his father passed away. He looked forward to deer hunting and spending time with his brother and family. He enjoyed visiting with his children and watching his grandchildren in their many activities.
He was a devoted husband and cared for his wife through several years of dementia and Parkinson’s. Bill and his wife enjoyed many years together in marriage until Jean’s passing in 2024 after which he grieved greatly from her battling Parkinson’s disease. Bill and Jean were married for 64 wonderful years.
Bill was preceded in death by his father Edward Pomeroy, mother Jenny Atwood and stepfather Lloyd Atwood. His sisters Ruthie Brunette (Terry), Janet Whitaker (Gene), stepbrothers Lee Atwood and Kenny Atwood, Holly Storm (Craig), and sisters-in-law Marcia Ziebart (Arnie) and Donna Harder (Richard).
Bill will be missed deeply by his three children Edward Pomeroy (Cheryl), Robert Montraix (Mona), and Deborah Schneider (John).
He was grandpa to nine loving grandchildren: Billy and Bridgette Pomeroy, Joseph Moore, Sierra, Dalton, and Collette Montraix, and Rachel, Cody (Grace), and Miranda Schneider and one loving great-grandson Christian Pomeroy-McNeice.
He is survived by his brother Randy Atwood (Debbie), stepsisters Helen and Linda, and stepbrother Dale.
We will remember dad for his easy going ways, love of his wife, children, and grandchildren, his never ending patience, and gentle sense of humor.
The family will greet relatives and friends at St. Mary’s Catholic Church in Crivitz on May 9 from 9 a.m. to noon with a mass to follow. Followed by a procession to the St. Mary’s Catholic Cemetery where the burial will take place. A luncheon will be provided at the St. Mary’s Catholic Church following the burial, everyone is welcome.
The family would like to give special thanks to Amanda Berg for the years of dedication and kindness to mom and dad while caregiving for them in their home. We would also like to thank uncle Randy and aunt Debbie for all the extra time that they spent assisting dad in the recovery of his surgery, and checking on him when his kids were unable to be there. Lastly, thank you to the EMS and Aurora Hospital for your kindness during an extremely difficult time.
We would love to imagine our dad in heaven sitting down at the table with his parents, enjoying spaghetti and meatballs that grandma had made for eternity.
