State GOP files FEC complaint against Minocqua Brewing Company Super PAC

The Republican Party of Wisconsin has filed a formal complaint with the Federal Elections Commission against the Minocqua Brewing Company Super PAC, alleging, among other things, failure to file required reports for an independent expenditure and unlawfully using corporate funds to provide direct support to federal candidates.

Bangstad call to action prompted barrage of emails to Hartzheim

A call to action last December from the Minocqua Brewing Company (MBC), which is owned by Kirk Bangstad, stoked supporters to write hundreds of emails to Minocqua town chairman Mark Hartzheim, among other things calling him a bully and the king of an “old-boys-network” who was engaging in a political vendetta that amounted to obstruction and harassment.

Walker rejects Melms’s $50,000 demand as extortion attempt

Lakeland Times publisher Gregg Walker this week rejected a demand for a $50,000 payment to attorney Frederick Melms (no association with Melms, Hogan & Francois law firm) and said he will not withdraw a professional misconduct complaint against the attorney or retract the newspaper’s reporting after Frederick Melms threatened a defamation lawsuit.

Proud “redneck”

To the Editor: Richard Moore’s account of the barrage of hate directed at Mark Hartzheim and condescension directed at Minocqua residents — much of which came from non-resident agitators — saddened me but, regretfully, did not surprise me. Hatefulness and vulgarity are defining characteristics of today’s left.

Reader requests explanation for “improbable” assertion in Bangstad CUP hearing article

To the Editor: At the end of an extensive article, in the Aug. 15, edition of The Lakeland Times, about the legality of certain actions by the Oneida County Planning and Development Committee “Times challenges legality of Bangstad CUP hearings,” I was surprised to read Gregg Walker state he did not believe if Oneida County supervisors received a citation for illegally deliberating on the matter they should or could be fined.

Tiffany-Zunker, Swearingen-Bangstad top Tuesday’s local races

The presidential matchup between President Donald Trump  and former Vice President Joe Biden has once again put Wisconsin in the center of next Tuesday’s national election, but local races too have generated enthusiasm on both sides as contested races for the 34th Assembly district and the seventh congressional district come to a head.

‘Scorched earth politics’

To the Editor: Scorched earth politics has come to northern Wisconsin. First we had Kirk Bangstad flat out lying last fall about his opponent Rob Swearingen and denigrating a reporter at the local public radio station, WXPR. Now, Vilas County Democrats have trashed a good local citizen, Chris Mayer.

‘Be this wave of progress’

To the Editor: On the national level we must make sure that Donald Trump is a One Term President. Trump is zeroing in on our state, attacking safe voting practices, making outrageously dangerous statements. Democratic presidential candidate Joe Biden once said, “One of the lessons of history is that often those who fan the flames of hate end up drawing forth the next wave of progress.” We must be this wave of progress.

Voter turnout low to fair in Tuesday’s uncontested primaries

In a rare election in which there were no contested elections in Oneida or Vilas counties, voter turnout was somewhat middling, with Democrats and Republicans voting in about equal numbers in Oneida County and Republicans showing stronger turnout numbers than Democrats in their primaries.  In Oneida County, 7,693 people cast ballots. That compared to 8,518 who voted in the August 2018 primary but was still far above the August 2016 primary, when only 5,074 people voted.

Letters to the Editor policy clarified

In response to a recent Letter to the Editor by Kirk Bangstad, published Nov. 21, questioning The Lakeland Times’ letters policy, the newspaper would like to remind readers of said policy.

Town of Minocqua to place boulders along right-of-way adjoining Minocqua Brewing Company

The Minocqua town board at its June 6 meeting agreed to take steps in limiting damage done to its right-of-way that adjoins land owned by the Minocqua Brewing Company (MBC). The right-of-way parcel at the corner of East Front Street and Chippewa Street has also been referred to as the “pork chop” because of its shape.

Few contested town board races in the Lakeland area

All town boards in Oneida and Vilas counties covered regularly by The Lakeland Times have seats up for election in 2021.  Of those, only a handful are contested. (subscriber access)

Lakeland Times: Our View

In the good old days way back when, back when real leadership existed in Oneida County, none was more fearless than the late, great Oneida County supervisor, Gary Baier.
