Letters to the Editor policy clarified
In response to a recent Letter to the Editor by Kirk Bangstad, published Nov. 21, questioning The Lakeland Times’ letters policy, the newspaper would like to remind readers of said policy.
The author of the letter questioned the newspaper’s policy in considering relevancy when determining letters for publication.
The Lakeland Times’ Letters to the Editor page is the only local forum where Lakeland area residents – full- and part-time alike – can voice their opinions about local, state and national issues and occurrences. We allow readers to voice their opinions on all topics that affect our lives. As long as letters are not libelous, we accept every person’s opinion as relevant. We may not agree with the letter writer’s opinion, but we do allow readers the space to espouse their views.
Newspapers must provide that service, as well as a forum for a continuing community conversation. We have always provided that opportunity for those interested in writing about issues, and we will continue to do so, regardless of whether or not other readers agree with the opinion.
As always, The Lakeland Times reserves the right to reject or edit all Letters to the Editor.
Letters to the Editor may be emailed to [email protected].
