Swearingen stresses broadband, help for rural schools

Ask state Rep. Rob Swearingen (R-Rhinelander) what he is proudest of in his work as a legislator, and he won’t rattle off a long list of bills he has introduced.

Minocqua Brewing Company removes post that violated newspaper’s copyright

As The Lakeland Times had demanded, the Minocqua Brewing Company has quietly removed from its Facebook page a post that republished an entire Times news article from this past spring, which The Times alleged violated its copyright protections.

Tiffany-Zunker, Swearingen-Bangstad top Tuesday’s local races

The presidential matchup between President Donald Trump  and former Vice President Joe Biden has once again put Wisconsin in the center of next Tuesday’s national election, but local races too have generated enthusiasm on both sides as contested races for the 34th Assembly district and the seventh congressional district come to a head.

The Times alleges copyright infringement by Minocqua Brewing Company

The Lakeland Times is demanding the Minocqua Brewing Company remove from its Facebook feed a post that republished an entire Times news article from this past spring, which The Times alleges violates its copyright protections.

Bangstad sign dispute heads to zoning committee

A controversy involving an oversized political sign and the Democratic nominee for the 34th Assembly district has thrown enforcement of the entire county sign ordinance into question, with the county’s zoning director halting any enforcement while the matter is sorted out.

Re-democratize Wisconsin

To the Editor: If the leadership of the Wisconsin Democratic Party was at all creative, they should have a campaign motto along the lines of “Re-democratize Wisconsin: vote Democratic!”

The return of the jackbooted liberal, with an elitist twist

The old saying, “Do as I say do, not as I do,” dates back centuries and has biblical origins, when religious leaders and others sought to instruct people to learn from the mistakes of others and to pay attention to their warnings not to repeat those mistakes.

Addressing the ‘tip of the iceberg’

Oneida County faces a crisis: water contaminated with toxic PFAS chemicals. PFAS are industrial chemicals linked to various cancers, low birth weights, thyroid disease, and increased cholesterol levels. Two city wells have been shut down because of this pollution, and if another is impaired, Rhinelander residents and businesses will face a shortage of clean water.

Questions for Kirk Bangstad

To the Editor: This election pits Democrat Kirk Bangstad against incumbent Rob Swearingen. We are familiar with Rep. Swearingen’s views on many specific issues. Mr. Bangstad is vocal about a few issues, but he remains publicly silent about others. Therefore, we ask Mr. Bangstad to answer these questions before we vote:

Oneida County zoning administrator orders Minocqua political sign removed

A political sign on the side of the Minocqua Brewing Company (MBC) is the subject of what’s become a battle of sorts between the brewery’s owner, Kirk Bangstad, and Oneida County.

‘Scorched earth politics’

To the Editor: Scorched earth politics has come to northern Wisconsin. First we had Kirk Bangstad flat out lying last fall about his opponent Rob Swearingen and denigrating a reporter at the local public radio station, WXPR. Now, Vilas County Democrats have trashed a good local citizen, Chris Mayer.

Swearingen crushes Bangstad in landslide win

Republican Donald Trump saw his fortunes slip in Wisconsin this year, but the president still ran strong in northern Wisconsin on Tuesday, fueled by GOP strength across the board, as Northwoods GOP Assembly incumbent Rob Swearingen powered his way to a massive win over Democratic challenger Kirk Bangstad in the 34th Assembly district.

Baghdad Bangstad and his intoxicating message

Back during the Iraqi war, when the neocons of George Bush and Dick Cheney were happily dancing about the globe committing all sorts of atrocities and war crimes, there emerged from the shadows of the bloodletting some comical relief — yes, the neocons tell us, war is funny! —by the name of a fellow everyone called Baghdad Bob.

Bangstad finance report doesn’t balance by more than $18,000

The January continuing campaign finance report filed by 34th District Assembly candidate Kirk Bangstad failed to balance by more than $18,000 — by far the largest discrepancy among a smattering of unbalanced ledgers found by The Times in a spot check of Assembly campaign finance reports.

Voter turnout low to fair in Tuesday’s uncontested primaries

In a rare election in which there were no contested elections in Oneida or Vilas counties, voter turnout was somewhat middling, with Democrats and Republicans voting in about equal numbers in Oneida County and Republicans showing stronger turnout numbers than Democrats in their primaries.  In Oneida County, 7,693 people cast ballots. That compared to 8,518 who voted in the August 2018 primary but was still far above the August 2016 primary, when only 5,074 people voted.

‘Be this wave of progress’

To the Editor: On the national level we must make sure that Donald Trump is a One Term President. Trump is zeroing in on our state, attacking safe voting practices, making outrageously dangerous statements. Democratic presidential candidate Joe Biden once said, “One of the lessons of history is that often those who fan the flames of hate end up drawing forth the next wave of progress.” We must be this wave of progress.

Response to ‘Leader of the Mob’ article

To the Editor: The editorial “Leader of the Mob” in The Lakeland Times and River News (June 19 edition) is just the latest example of the newspapers using their institutional power to smear a local resident. There are so many things to respond to, but I will mention just three.

Standing up to the leader of the mob

Mob rule has been a staple of America’s leftist politics for a while now, and so it is hardly surprising the Left has now unleashed its version of it in the Northwoods, an uprising against honest debate and integrity that most assuredly will be countered and defeated.
