Addressing the ‘tip of the iceberg’
Oneida County faces a crisis: water contaminated with toxic PFAS chemicals. PFAS are industrial chemicals linked to various cancers, low birth weights, thyroid disease, and increased cholesterol levels. Two city wells have been shut down because of this pollution, and if another is impaired, Rhinelander residents and businesses will face a shortage of clean water.
Response to ‘Leader of the Mob’ article
To the Editor: The editorial “Leader of the Mob” in The Lakeland Times and River News (June 19 edition) is just the latest example of the newspapers using their institutional power to smear a local resident. There are so many things to respond to, but I will mention just three.
Writer defends chamber
In Richard Moore's opinion piece entitled "Who needs tourism?" published on 10/31, he upbraided the Minocqua Chamber of Commerce's staff, and its Director, Krystal Westfahl, for sending out a questionnaire to area businesses that included a question on whether Beef-A-Rama should be continued.
Why not with the opinions?
Richard Moore’s nearly three-page article entitled “Unholy Alliance: Special interests, bureaucrats, and the media,” quoted one source: the 2014 GOP minority staff of the U.S. Senate Committee on Environment and Public Work’s study.
Vos, Evers administration: High court should reject school choice lawsuit
It’s rare that the administration of Gov. Tony Evers and Assembly speaker Robin Vos join forces, but somehow Kirk Bangstad has managed to unite them, with both parties aligning against Bangstad’s bid to have the Supreme Court bypass lower courts and directly take up his challenge to the state’s school choice programs.
Lakeland Times: Our View
In Wisconsin, voters are tasked with the major responsibility of electing judges whom we depend upon to make sure that citizens’ constitutional rights are protected, that laws are applied as the legislature has written them, and that citizens are held appropriately accountable when they violate those laws.
An Evening with Kirk Bangstad: Singing for a cure
For Kirk Bangstad, the road to his performance Tuesday night at The Campanile Center for the Arts has been a long, convoluted, complicated and joyous journey. (Public access)
Writer questions LTE policy
I just read this submission to the “Letters to the Editor” section:
With pick for Oneida County judge, Evers appoints a party loyalist
When Gov. Tony Evers appointed Rhinelander attorney Mary Roth Burns to replace retiring judge Patrick O’Melia, the governor called her a “respected attorney” loaded with legal experience.
Lakeland Times: Our View
When it comes to who should prevail in Tuesday’s election for Oneida County circuit judge, there should be no lack of clarity among county voters: It’s district attorney Michael Schiek by a mile, or more, over judge Mary Roth Burns.
Michels defeats Kleefisch; Toney takes down Jarchow
News analysis Trump-backed businessman and GOP gubernatorial candidate Tim Michels rolled to the Republican nomination Tuesday, defeating former lieutenant governor Rebecca Kleefisch comfortably, while a candidate who texted his disdain for Donald Trump in 2020, Fond du Lac district attorney Eric Toney, edged conservative former lawmaker Adam Jarchow for the GOP nod for attorney general.
Reader wants less Bangstad, more international coverage of consensus issues
To the Editor: As a summer/vacation resident of this beautiful area for decades, I have always made it a point to read The Lakeland Times.
Re-democratize Wisconsin
To the Editor: If the leadership of the Wisconsin Democratic Party was at all creative, they should have a campaign motto along the lines of “Re-democratize Wisconsin: vote Democratic!”
Bangstad fan cited for phone harassment of Lakeland Times
An Arena, Wisconsin, man has been cited for telephone harassment of The Lakeland Times after making an early morning call to the newspaper and leaving a message loaded with obscenities.
Light agenda for Minocqua plan commission
The Minocqua plan commission, meeting for a little more than 10 minutes Tuesday, made quick work of signage applications for two businesses and two administrative review permit (ARP) applications related to tourist rooming houses.

To the Editor: At the February meeting of The Presque Isle Town Board I asked three of our elected officials to resign.
