According to Travel Wisconsin, the Arts, Culture & Heritage category celebrates organizations or destinations showcasing “arts, culture or heritage to enhance the tourism experience and economic well-being of a community.” Last year’s winner of the award was the Milwaukee Art Museum.

A free class was held in Lac du Flambeau the weekend of Dec. 6-7, teaching people how to butcher a deer, properly prepare and can the meat and how to safely store it. The Oneida County snowmobile trail system opens today at noon. On Dec. 16, the county’s forestry, land and recreation department issued a public service announcement (PSA), after the snowmobile council voted that afternoon, warning that while the trails are set to open, all lake and river trails in the county are considered unsafe and dangerous until clearly marked by the snowmobile clubs.

Minocqua town board hires designer for Hwy. 51 off-road path south to Leary Road

The Minocqua town board at a Dec. 16 special meeting agreed to go with engineering firm Strand Associates to design a multi-use path to be constructed alongside U.S. Highway 51 from Manitou Park Drive to Leary Road. The project would use grant funding through the state Department of Transportation’s (DOT) Transportation Alternatives Program (TAP).

The Lake Tomahawk town board formally adopted its budget for the upcoming year. Town chairman George DeMet said there wasn’t much change to the budget, which has a property tax levy of $811,914 included, a 1.73 percent increase from the 2025 budget.

The Hazelhurst town board at its Dec. 9 meeting adopted a road that will be off of U.S. Highway 51 north and titled Bearskin Trail Access Road. Town chairman Ted Cushing said three-plus years ago the town was approached by the state Department of Transportation (DOT) asking if the town would like roughly five acres south of Raven Lane to create an access road for the Bearskin Trail.

Eagle River man charged with 1st degree sexual assault of a child

An Eagle River man made an initial appearance in Vilas County court on Dec. 2 for being charged with first degree child sexual assault of a child under 16. Shawn M. Briscoe, 37, Eagle River, was alleged to have sexually assaulted a child on various occasions with the use of threat or force and violence over the course of multiple years, according to the criminal complaint.

Former Camp Jorn employee pleads guilty to neglecting child felony

A 29-year-old Mercer woman pleaded guilty to a class H felony of neglecting a child with the consequence of bodily harm during a court hearing on Dec. 1 in Vilas County court. According to court records, Alexis Engler, who was a preschool teacher at Camp Jorn in Manitowish Waters, knowingly and voluntarily waived her rights to a jury trial and entered the guilty plea.

A Minocqua man pled guilty on Nov. 7 in federal court to charges of wire fraud and money laundering. Chadwick M. Elgersma, attorney for the United States Attorney’s Office Western District of Wisconsin, announced on Nov. 24 that Corey Kromray, 40, of Minocqua, entered the guilty pleas in court in Madison.

Park Falls death being investigated as homicide

The Park Falls Police Department is leading an investigation after officers responded to the 1200 block of Saunders Avenue just before 9 p.m. and “found a deceased adult outside of the residence” on Nov. 24. The state Department of Justice Division of Criminal Investigation, the Wisconsin State Patrol and the Price County Sheriff's Office are assisting with the investigation as well.

Three LUHS musicians hit high notes at state honors

Three Lakeland Union High School (LUHS) students were invited to participate in the Wisconsin School Music Association’s state honors band and choir performances in Madison last month. There were two freshmen, Haily Massignan on trombone and Claire Elbe on clarinet, who made the middle level state honors band. Junior Miranda Schneider made the high school honors choir.

Thoughts from deer camp on opening weekend

The Manitowish Waters town board approved the town’s 2026 budget during a Nov. 19 regular meeting immediately following the town’s budget hearing and annual meeting of electors. Prior to the board approving the budget, electors, with a hand vote of 39-19, authorized the board to exceed the allowable tax levy increase by $126,610 — a 7.1455 percent increase — during the annual meeting.

Veterans Day protest turns fowl: Reporter and combat veteran called ‘chicken,’ ‘turkey’ outside Times office

A group of protesters stood outside The Lakeland Times building for roughly 10 minutes on Veterans Day, Nov. 11, one coming off the road right-of-way to look into the Times building and eventually call Times reporter Brian Jopek a “chicken.” Another protester called him a “turkey” when he went out to take a photograph of the demonstration for the paper.

The Hazelhurst town board agreed at its Nov. 11 to send the state Department of Natural Resources (DNR) condition reports of Lake Katherine and a draft “wake boat ordinance” for review. Paul Strong, of the Lake Katherine Association, said the board of directors for that body supported a resolution submitted to the town board establishing its support of “initiating this ordinance proposal.”

A Woodruff man, formerly of Rhinelander, pled no contest to two felony charges of second degree sexual assault of an unconscious person and capturing intimate representation during a pre-trial conference on Oct. 27 in Oneida County court.

North Lakeland board of education approves 2026 budget

District administrator says there were minor changes, overall budget increases less than 1%

The North Lakeland School district’s budget and total tax levy was approved by the board of education during a board meeting following its budget hearing and annual meeting on Oct. 28. District administrator and principal Brent Jelinski said the hearing, annual meeting and special meeting lasted a combined total of nearly 20 minutes. He said there was only one member of the community who attended.

LUHS reassigns over $3 million in general fund, budget gets approved

Groundbreaking held for 112-unit apartment complex being built in Minocqua

A groundbreaking was held on Oct. 24 for a new apartment complex coming to Minocqua’s west side, just east of Wildwood Wildlife Park Zoo and Safari. Aspen Grove Apartments will consist of 112 units over seven two-story buildings with 16 apartments in each and ranging from one-bedroom, two-bedroom and three-bedroom options.

Boulder Junction town board raises room tax rate by 1.25%

The Boulder Junction town board agreed to raise the town’s room tax by 1.25 percent during its regular meeting on Tuesday, Oct. 28. Currently, the room tax rate in the town is 5.5 percent and it will be 6.75 percent starting in 2026. The max allowable room tax rate by the state a town can have is 8 percent.

Presque Isle town board will seek legal advice on who should prepare Times’ record request

Board denies requested $1K fee waiver associated with records

The Presque Isle town board held a special meeting on Oct. 23 to primarily discuss preparing a resolution in order to ask electors to exceed its levy limit by over $1 million dollars. However, board members indicated there will need to be another special meeting to handle that and discussed a few other items instead — such as an open records request made by The Lakeland Times in February that hasn’t been satisfied by the town.
