Sheriff’s department, DA find Oneida zoning violated parliamentary procedure
The Oneida County Sheriff’s Office and the Oneida County district attorney both say the Oneida County zoning committee violated the county’s mandated parliamentary procedures when it adjourned a public hearing in the middle of the vote, but neither entity has taken any action against the officials after the findings.

Reader wants less Kirk Bangstad coverage
To the Editor: I hate to think of all of the ink you have wasted on your personal vendetta about Kurt [sic] Bangsted's [sic] CUP for the Minocqua Brewing Company.
MBC, a needless summertime drama
To the Editor: As articles by Mr. Moore go, this one is as close to “balanced” as it gets I suppose. But really, 2,593 words. Once again, we have a bloated piece.
Oneida County zoning hammers Minocqua businesses
Even as the Oneida County zoning committee has given downtown Minocqua business owner Kirk Bangstad more time to fashion an acceptable conditional use permit application for an outdoor beer garden despite more than a year of infractions of his now-revoked permit, the county zoning department has lowered the boom on 12 other downtown businesses for alleged noncompliant outdoor activities, ordering immediate compliance and/or the payment of large after-the-fact permit fees.

Times challenges legality of Bangstad CUP hearings
The Lakeland Times has filed a complaint against members of the Oneida County Planning & Development Committee and corporation counsel Mike Fugle, alleging in a letter to the county’s district attorney and sheriff that the officials violated both state statutes and the county’s general code in conducting recent hearings for a conditional use permit for Kirk Bangstad’s Minocqua Brewing Company.
Reader asserts all Moore stories are political and biased
To the Editor: The Lakeland Times is a wonderful paper — except for the news section, which is increasingly dominated by Richard Moore stories, all of which are biased, as several letter-writers have complained in these pages.
Reader condemns editorial’s ‘baseless speculation’
To the Editor: Last Friday evening I settled onto our living room couch planning to enjoy the latest edition of The Northwoods River News (I’m easily entertained, ok?). Straightaway the special section “Heroes on the Homefront” spoke to me. Here was a 24-page homage to the generous and committed people who give so much of themselves to benefit our communities, often with little or no recognition.
Cease fire in Minocqua?
To the Editor: Our politics suck. And the cause is one man whom I’ve despised since the mid-80s because he was all hat and no cattle then as he is now. Somehow, he has tapped into the angst of far too many people who are overreaching in the pendulum of human perception. If you’ve watched a single episode of “The Apprentice” and you use that as a guide to your worldview today, you are a mesmerized numbskull who should turn off the boob tube and smell the dandelions.
Lakeland Times: Our View
It’s time to ask Oneida County some tough questions, and we’ll start with the biggest one: When are the overlords in the county courthouse on S. Oneida Avenue in Rhinelander going to start giving taxpayers and residents in the Lakeland area their fair share of county services, based on the amount of property taxes they pay?
Accuracy affirmed
To the Editor: I finally got around to read the recent The Lakeland Times. What drew my interest was Richard Moore’s news analysis article of the “Cap Times Report Questioned for Omissions” on DPI investigations of teacher improprieties and his follow-up “Our View” opinion piece that “Umland should sue Cap Times” which seemed to blur the lines of reporting and opinion. Please note that I am questioning journalist ethics.
Primary election endorsements: Jarchow and Tiffany
For attorney general: Adam Jarchow The Republican primary contest for attorney general features two major candidates who sharply contrast with each other, Fond du Lac district attorney Eric Toney and former lawmaker and attorney Adam Jarchow.
Lakeland Times: Our View
If you live in the Lakeland area and have been wondering what that smell is hanging in the winter air, well, first off, it’s not the folks at the Minocqua Brewing Company, as reasonable a thought as that might be. Not this time, anyway.
As winter illnesses rise, so do mask controversies
News analysis ’Tis the season for colds and flu and increased Covid-19 infections, which also means it’s the season for school masking controversies and possible lawsuits. Over the past month, as traditional winter illnesses have begun to take hold, and rising Covid infections have pushed community infection levels from low to medium to (in some cases) high, a few school districts around the country have begun to reimpose mask mandates, potentially opening last year’s cans of litigious worms.
Hartman asserts authority to enforce Oneida County code
Pushing back against some county officials, Oneida County sheriff Grady Hartman says he has full authority to enforce the county code — authority in fact given to him by the county code — but has decided against issuing a citation to zoning committee and county board chairman Scott Holewinski, who has acknowledged violating the code by breaking parliamentary procedure.
‘The whole story’
To the Editor: I would like to thank Kirk Bangstad for letting us know that Rob Swearingen is doing what we elected him to do and that is representing us to Madison. I for one tend to agree, a mask mandate is a foolish idea because it should be up to the business owners if they wish to require customers to wear one or individuals. It should not be up to the government. Besides that, when you look at what other democratic governors have done mismanaging the pandemic, Cuomo in New York, Newsom in California, and Pritzker in Illinois. Even before the pandemic these states were like petri dishes of failed experiments in socialism. During the pandemic these governors locked their states down, imposed other riles upon the citizens such as mandator mask and now these states are like third world nations within our own nation. This is what Rob Swearingen is protecting us from, so job well done, Rob.
Reader concludes editorials shameful
To the Editor: It doesn’t take much analysis of its latest issues to come to the conclusion that the Lakeland Times, like much of conservative America and its allies in the extremist right-wing media, are once again happy to support Donald Trump in his anti-American death spiral into political and legal oblivion.
Lakeland Times: Our View
We suppose we should never be surprised about what is going on in Oneida County government — virtually none of it any good — and so it wasn’t much of a shock when the Oneida County district attorney completely flubbed her analysis of our complaint about the zoning committee’s actions in a public hearing related to Kirk Bangstad’s conditional use permit application.
Addressing the ‘tip of the iceberg’
Oneida County faces a crisis: water contaminated with toxic PFAS chemicals. PFAS are industrial chemicals linked to various cancers, low birth weights, thyroid disease, and increased cholesterol levels. Two city wells have been shut down because of this pollution, and if another is impaired, Rhinelander residents and businesses will face a shortage of clean water.
