Thunderbirds clinch No. 3 seed in conference tournament
A dominating win secured the Lakeland boys’ hockey team the No. 3 seed in the Great Northern Conference (GNC) tournament. The Thunderbirds shut out Rhinelander 8-0 in a road game on Thursday. On Friday, non-conference Regis/Altoona/McDonell won 7-5 in Minocqua.
Lady T-Birds win seventh straight game
On the final day of January, the Lakeland girls’ basketball team won their 38th straight Great Northern Conference (GNC) game. The Thunderbirds beat the Red Robins 80-22 in Minocqua.
Lakeland boys’ wrestling prepping to host GNC Meet
The Lakeland boys’ wrestling team finally hosted a conference quad that featured a number of individual wins on Thursday.
LUHS girls’ wrestling team gets mat time
The Lakeland girls’ wrestling team had their own meet when they traveled to Eau Claire North for the Girls Husky Wrestling Challenge. The Thunderbirds finished 12th out of 29 teams with 131 points on Saturday. Forest Lake, Minn. won with 374.5 points.
American Pond Hockey Invitational returns to Minocqua
Dozens of elite hockey teams from around the country (and two from Great Britain) will return to Minocqua to compete in the American Pond Hockey Invitational for the third year in a row.

Lakeland Area Baseball Association registration now open
Lakeland Area Baseball Association (LABA) registration is now open. For ages 5 through 13 — based on age on April 30, 2025. T-Ball, Rookies, Minors, Majors, Babe Ruth Prep 13 are options. Registration is open Jan. 1 through March 2.
Castle Guards sweep Mercer basketball teams
The Mercer basketball teams played a road doubleheader against Washburn on Friday. The Tigers struggled to score points. The Lady Tigers fell 45-28 to the Castle Guards. Washburn beat the Mercer boys’ basketball team 70-32.
Lakeland Nordic ski teams come up short at conference
For the first time in a long time, the Lakeland Nordic ski teams didn’t bring home a conference championship. The Lakeland girls finished second out of three qualified teams with 13 points at the Northern Conference Meet in Cable on Tuesday. The Spooner girls took first with nine points.
LUHS boys’ hoops wins thriller on the road
The Lakeland boys’ basketball team snapped their losing steak in a thrilling way on Tuesday night. The Thunderbirds went into Hayward and came away with a 68-67 road win. Evan Zoch scored the go-ahead and winning points on a field goal with seconds remaining.
Thunderbirds tie Flivvers
Teams either win, lose or tie an opponent in a game. For the Lakeland boys’ hockey team, they’ve seen a number of ties this season, including Tuesday night. The Thunderbirds and Kingsford, Mich. tied 2-2 in Minocqua.

Mercer boys’ basketball team falls twice
The Mercer boys’ basketball team couldn’t end their losing streak with one non-conference and one conference game. The Tigers fell 86-36 on Monday to non-conference Wakefield-Marenisco, Mich. on the road. South Shore beat the Tigers 63-45 in Mercer on Tuesday.
Mercer girls’ hoops drops two games
The Mercer girls’ basketball team got back one of their key players before playing back-to-back games. First, the Tigers fell 61-29 to non-conference Wakefield-Marenisco, Mich. on the road on Monday. Then, Mercer fell 49-31 to South Shore on Tuesday night in Mercer.
American Pond Hockey returns Feb. 7-8, 14-15
The American Pond Hockey Tournament returns to Minocqua this February for two weekends of thrilling outdoor hockey at the iconic Aqua Bowl. The Thunderbirds put together one of their most complete performances of the season with a big win over a non-conference opponent. The Lakeland Union High School girls’ basketball team beat Medford 65-32 in a Great Northern Conference (GNC) game on Friday. Then, the Thunderbirds beat Xavier 73-32 on Saturday.
