The Lakeland girls’ tennis team took home their second straight conference championship by winning the Great Northern Conference (GNC) Tournament on Thursday.
With injuries accumulating at key spots, the Lakeland football team couldn’t hang on to a lead late against Merrill on the road on Saturday. The Bluejays beat the Thunderbirds 18-12 at Jay Stadium. It’s the first time that Lakeland had lost a conference game to someone other than Mosinee or Medford since 2021.
The top two teams in the Great Northern Conference (GNC) boys’ soccer standings met up in Minocqua on Thursday. The Thunderbirds gained a crucial point in a shootout loss. The Thunderbirds and Eagles tied at 2-2 after 80 minutes of play. Northland Pines gained an extra point on Lakeland with a 5-3 win in a penalty kick shootout.
The Thunderbird cross country teams had some of the top team scores when they ran in Three Lakes on Thursday. The Lakeland boys finished in first place out of nine teams with 40 points at the Three Lakes Invite at Big Stone Golf Course. The Lakeland girls placed third out of nine teams with 68 points.
The Lakeland girls’ swim team had a challenging dual meet when the reigning Division 2 state champions came to Minocqua on Thursday. “I think we had a good meeting against Rhinelander,” coach Tierney Edwards said. “Looking at the score, one may not think so, but Rhinelander is a great team.”
The Mercer volleyball team is starting to put it all together with a successful showing in their most recent games. The Tigers won their fourth Northern Lights Conference match on the season on Thursday, beating Butternut 3-0 (25-9, 25-13, 25-13) at home.
The Thunderbirds responded from two losses last Saturday and got back on track with a road win at Tomahawk on Tuesday. “That means a lot, especially on their home court,” coach Taylor Bruhl said. “The crowds brought it on both sides so it was really fun to play with an energetic crowd.”
The Lakeland boys’ soccer team took a break from conference games with two non-conference wins. The Thunderbirds beat Washburn 3-0 on the road on Saturday. Lakeland came back home on Monday to beat Three Lakes 5-0 in Minocqua.
Coming off their biggest loss of the season, the Lakeland football team gets an extra day of rest as they prepare for Merrill. The Thunderbirds (3-2, 1-2 GNC) take on the Bluejays (3-2, 1-2 GNC) tomorrow afternoon in Merrill. The Bluejays already have three more regular season wins than they had all of last year (0-9).
Two more wins gave the Lakeland girls’ tennis team momentum as they prepared for yesterday’s Great Northern Conference Meet. The Thunderbirds beat Assumption 6-1 as part of a non-conference invite at Wisconsin Rapids Lincoln High School on Saturday. On Monday, Lakeland beat Marshfield Columbus 6-1 to finish the conference dual season undefeated at 7-0 for a second straight year.
