Top-five finish
The Lakeland girls’ wrestling team got its season off to a positive start with the fourth-most points at an invite last weekend. The Thunderbirds finished fourth out of 30 teams with 98 points at the Red Robin Girls Invite Friday, Dec. 5 in Antigo.
T-Bird boys’ wrestling finishes in 12th place
The Lakeland boys’ wrestling team got more mat experience with an invite in Antigo last weekend. The Thunderbirds finished 12th out of 18 teams with 57.5 points at the John Roberts Invite in Antigo on Saturday.
Northwoods Golf Classic now through March at Lakeland Fitness & Golf
Lakeland Fitness & Golf presents “The Majors,” a Northwoods Golf Classic. It’s a five-month golf tournament benefiting local non-profits now through March. Generations Sr. Center was the November beneficiary for this event.
Lakeland/Mercer collegiate update
Leonard Chosa III (wrestling) didn’t wrestle in the University of Wisconsin-Oshkosh’s 29-17 loss to the University of Wisconsin-Stevens Point on Thursday, Dec. 4. Chosa didn’t wrestle in the UW-La Crosse Duals on Saturday.
LUHS gymnastics update
The Lakeland gymnastics team’s dual meet against Ashland, originally scheduled for Tuesday, Dec. 9, has been rescheduled to Feb. 10. Thunderbirds drop first two matches of the season
A shorthanded Lakeland boys’ wrestling team dropped two matches during a season-opening double dual in Tomahawk. The Hatchets defeated Lakeland 59-21 in a Great Northern Conference dual on Thursday. Then, non-conference Athens beat the Thunderbirds 47-30.
Season review: T-Bird boys’ soccer dominated
A historic Lakeland boys’ soccer season came up one game short of state. On the way, the Thunderbirds found many successes. The Thunderbirds went 17-1-1 overall, their best winning percentage as a team since at least 2008. They averaged 4.3 goals per game and gave up 0.4 goals per game.
LUHS boys’ hockey team falls to Waupaca
The Lakeland Union High School boys’ hockey team dropped its second straight Great Northern Conference game when they traveled to Waupaca on Thursday. The Comets beat the Thunderbirds 4-1. Thursday marked Waupaca’s first win over Lakeland since Dec. 22, 2018.
Season preview: Lady T-Bird gymnastics young and on the rise
The Lakeland Union High School gymnastics team is returning this season after a canceled 2024-25 campaign. The future looks bright moving forward. Numbers are way up this season as Lakeland builds the program back up.

Lakeland girls’ basketball Junior Thunderbirds registration
All first- through fourth-grade girls are invited to participate in the Junior Thunderbirds program and learn to play the ‘Lakeland Way.’ Players will develop introductory offensive skills with an emphasis on ball handling, passing and shooting.
Lakeland basketball winter youth skills sessions registration
Lakeland Union High School Thunderbirds boys’ basketball is offering winter youth skills sessions for grades 1 through 4. This program will be run in conjunction with the LUHS girls’ basketball program. Coaches and players will be helping out from both programs.
Win streak comes to an end
The Lakeland girls’ basketball team seemed destined to pick up its first win of the season on Tuesday. Merrill finished on a high note and, in turn, ended the Thunderbirds’ Great Northern Conference win streak.
T-Bird boys’ hockey team drops home, conference opener to reigning state champs
Hosting the reigning WIAA Division 2 state champions, the Thunderbird boys’ hockey team didn’t have the firepower to keep up with Tomahawk. The Hatchets defeated the Thunderbirds 8-1 in the Great Northern Conference opener at the Lakeland Hawks Ice Arena on Tuesday.
Down to the wire
The Lakeland boys’ swim team came up a couple points short of upsetting Medford in the season opener on Tuesday in Minocqua. The Raiders beat the Thunderbirds 65-57. Lakeland won seven of the 11 events, but the Raiders used their depth to overtake the home team.
