Delores E. Clark

Dolores E. (Comer) Clark, most recently of Spring Arbor, Mich., died on Aug. 18, 2020 in Spring Arbor at the age of 85. At her request, no funeral or memorial service will be held. Dolores was born in Creston, Iowa on Jan. 21, 1935 — the middle child of Orval B. Comer and Lola May (Cole) Comer. Her family moved often when she was a child, and, though Dolores attended Rock Falls Township High School in Illinois for several years, she graduated from Stillman Valley Community High School in Illinois in 1953 as a member of the band and National Honor Society. In 1956, she married Robert Lynn Clark in Wausau; they divorced in 1971. Left alone in 1967 to raise four young boys, Dolores quickly transitioned from homemaker to working full-time. Her first job was with the Green Bay Packaging Company of Wausau. In 1968, Dolores began to work in the Marathon County, Wisconsin Tax Description Department, where she worked for 30 years before retiring in 1998 — finishing her working career as head of the tax description department. After retiring, Dolores moved to Minocqua to be closer to her son, Bruce, and his family. In 2003, Dolores again moved — this time to Jackson, Mich., to be near her son, Robert, and his family. Eventually, Dolores moved to a retirement community in Spring Arbor, Mich., where she lived until her death. Wherever Dolores lived, church was a fundamental component of her life and service to others. She was a woman of deep and profound faith — always involved in church activities and outreach. In her younger years, Dolores loved to teach Sunday School and lead sing-a-alongs — often accompanying on the piano or accordion. Dolores loved many things in life, but particularly games, fishing, music, and animals. Dolores’ idea of a good time was to spend the day fishing and the evening playing card and board games with a menagerie of animals running underfoot while a recording of the Gaither Family played in the background. Though she was generally quiet and somewhat shy, Dolores was highly competitive and disliked losing; she could energetically play games for hours until everyone else had gone to bed and no one was left to play. Animals were always an essential element of Dolores’ life. She grew up on farms and was used to having a large assortment of animals around her. While raising her boys, Dolores’ home was always filled any number of cats, dogs, fish, rodents, reptiles, and birds. As she got older, Dolores particularly cherished her dogs. Dolores was preceded in death by her parents, her older brother (John Comer), her younger sister (Helen (Comer) Rackley), her youngest son (Steven Hale Clark), and a granddaughter (Emily Willegal), as well as her former husband (Robert Lynn Clark, Sr.). Dolores is survived by three sons (Bruce Lowell Clark, Jeffery Alan Clark, and Robert Lynn Clark, Jr. (Sheri), in addition to seven grandchildren and eight great-grandchildren. Memorial contributions in her memory may be made to the Jackson County Animal Shelter 3370 Spring Arbor Road Jackson, MI 49203 https://www.co.jackson.mi.us/641/Donate
