Charles Granger

Charles Granger, 90, a former teacher and principal, known for his love of the profession and the people of all ages with whom he worked, died Wednesday night, Jan. 6, of COVID-19 and other problems at Powerback Rehabilitation in Philadelphia.
Charlie was a teacher and administrator in the Upper Darby School District and worked with student teachers at West Chester and Pennsylvania State Universities. At Upper Darby, he held the positions of teacher of World Cultures, Principal of Clifton Heights Jr. High and Drexel Hill Middle School, as well as director of personnel for the district. In addition, he was active in the Pennsylvania Middle School Association.
Mr. Granger was born in Milwaukee in 1930 to Oscar S. Granger and Anne Whelen Granger. The young family moved to Pennsylvania soon after, where he attended Haverford Township schools where his father was principal of the high school. He was active in sports there, playing soccer, basketball and baseball — continuing soccer into his college years at West Chester University, where he earned his bachelor and masters degrees. His college years were interrupted by service in the U.S. Army during the Korean War, where he did some training of recruits and first realized he might want to teach as a career.
Mr. Granger enjoyed vocal activities in high school and throughout his life in choral and choir music. Charlie was an active member, Sunday School teacher and Elder at Media Presbyterian Church for many years. During his later years, he enjoyed woodland living in the Lakeland area of Northern Wisconsin, where again he was an Elder and choir member at Community Presbyterian Church in Lac du Flambeau. During his time there he participated in leadership in the local Lions Club and the Chamber of Commerce. Spare time in retirement was spent fishing on the nearby lakes as he had on summer vacations  all through his life.
Charlie and his wife have resided in Media, Penn., for the last three years in order to enjoy family. He was preceded in death by his parents, his sister Joanne Blessing and his son Andrew Whelen Granger. He is survived by his wife of 59 years, Ellen, nee Dixon, his sons David Charles Granger of Middletown and William Dixon Granger of Media as well as grandsons Ryan, Zachary, Matthew, Nathan, Jake and Shane.
A Zoom service will be held from the Community Presbyterian Church of Lac du Flambeau led by Pastor Dr. William Anderson. In lieu of flowers donations may be made in Charlie's memory to the church at P.O. Box 159, Lac du Flambeau WI 54538.
The family wishes to thank those who cared so well for Charlie in his last days.
In lieu of flowers memorials may be sent in his name to the
