In an unusual turn of events at the May 3 Lac du Flambeau Public School board meeting, a visitor spoke out.

Janice Peckels, a long time resident of the area, recently moved back to Vilas County where she noticed a large amount of her taxes going towards the LdF Public School.

"I got the tax statement and I've never seen something like this before and I need to be educated by members of the board or whatever how of five entities here, Flambeau school is 70 percent of my property tax. So, to tell you the truth, I was flabbergasted but I just want to be educated," Peckels expressed.

There are six entities within the property tax, those being the State of Wisconsin, Vilas County, Town of Lac du Flambeau, Lac du Flambeau Public School, Lakeland Union High School, and Nicolet Vocational, Technical and Adult Ed.

Lac du Flambeau Public School accounts for 57 percent of property taxes in Vilas County while LdF and LUHS combined account for 71 percent.

The board informed Peckels if she made an appointment with the administrator he could lay out all of the information she asks for and go over the budget with her.

Building and grounds summer projects

The first item to get approved from the board was four new kitchen cooler compressors.

The current compressors are original to the building and cost a large amount of money per year.

"Currently we're sticking in, for having issues, anywhere from $5,000 to $8,000 a year we're putting into either our condensing units or evaporators in our kitchen coolers," director of building and grounds at LdF Public School Paul Lehman said.

The board approved a bid from Stainless Specialists for $18,713.

The next item to get approved was a blacktop project. This project will replace or add blacktop to the tennis courts, outside door 14, around the storage shed, create a new parking lot, outside door 33, and in the playground area.

The new parking lot will hold about 32 vehicles and blacktop will only be put on the places grass cannot grow in the playground, leaving the students with plenty of grass to play on.

New board member Melissa Doud suggested a sidewalk be put in place from the road to the bleachers.

"One thing I have noticed is every time we come to sporting events the walk from the road to the bleachers, if there was some type of sidewalk all the way down to the bleachers," Doud said. "I see people that are handicapped and going over tuffs of grass, people with strollers, if there was some kind of paved way to get to the bleachers."

Lehman originally suggested crushed granite as a low cost option for the school but the board said the path might still be difficult for people with handicaps.

Lehman said he will bring quotes to the next meeting.

The board approved a bid from Lappino for $150,801.

The third item to be approved was the parking lot sealing.

The crackfilling and sealcoating will cover the back staff parking, bus drop off, main parking, and basketball court on the playground.

The board approved a bid from Fahrner for $18,075.26.

The final item to be approved by the board was carpet replacement.

Carpet will be replaced in eight classrooms and the auditorium.

Lehman suggested instead of one sheet of carpet the carpet will be in the form of carpet tiles.

The board approved a bid from Country Charm Carpet Center for a total of $37.122.50.
