Northwoods Book Festival continues June 27


The Northwoods Book Festival is a joint project of six libraries in northern Wisconsin: Boulder Junction Public Library, Frank B. Koller Memorial Library in Manitowish Waters, Mercer Public Library, Minocqua Public Library, Presque Isle Community Library, and Winchester Public Library.

All programs are free and open to the public. The 2017 Northwoods Book Festival series is sponsored by a grant from the St. Matthias Thrift Shop in Minocqua.

The 2017 Northwoods Book Festival sponsored by St. Matthias Thrift Show, began Tuesday, June 13, in Manitowish Waters with Chad Lewis, and continues June 27 at the North Lakeland Discovery Center with Callie Bates.



June 27: Callie Bates

The North Lakeland Discovery Center in Manitowish Waters hosts Callie Bates from 5 to 8 p.m. on June 27 for the release of "The Waking Land." There will be live music, a book signing and books available for purchase. White pine seedlings will be given away as party favors to the first 100 guests. The party is an open house, with some brief remarks around 6 p.m.



July 13: Michael Perry

New York Times bestselling author, humorist and radio show host from New Auburn, Michael Perry will make an appearance at 7 p.m. at Campanile Center for the Arts.

Perry's bestselling memoirs include "Population 485," "Truck: A Love Story," "Coop," and "Visiting Tom." His first book for young readers, "The Scavengers," was published in 2014 and first novel for adult readers, "The Jesus Cow," was published in May of 2015.



July 20: Victoria Houston

At 7 p.m. on Thursday, July 20, Victoria Houston will be at Mercer Public Library.

Houston is the author of "Dead Spider," the latest in the Loon Lake Mystery Series set in the Northwoods of Wisconsin against a background of fishing. Houston was born and raised in Rhinelander, in the heart of the fishing culture which backgrounds her mysteries. She grew up fishing for walleye and bluegills and muskie, and learned to fly fish at the age of 50.



Aug. 3: Larry Watson

Larry Watson will visit Boulder Junction Public Library at 7 p.m. on Thursday, Aug. 3.

Watson is the author of the novels "As Good As Gone," "Let Him Go," "Montana 1948," "American Boy," "In A Dark Time," "White Crosses," "Laura," "Orchard," and "Sundown, Yellow Moon; the fiction collection Justice"; and the chapbook of poetry "Leaving Dakota." Watson's fiction has been published in 10 foreign editions, and been awarded by Milkweed Press, Friends of American Writers, Mountain and Plains Booksellers Association, Mountain and ​Plains Library Association, New York Public Library, Wisconsin Library Association, Critics' Choice, and The High Plains Book Award.



Aug. 8: B.J. Hollars

At 7 p.m. on Tuesday, Aug. 8, B.J. Hollars will speak at Mercer Public Library.

Hollars is the author of several books, most recently "Flock Together: A Love Affair With Extinct Birds," "From the Mouths of Dogs: What Our Pets Teach Us About Life, Death, and Being Human," as well as a collection of essays, "This Is Only A Test."



Aug. 22: Joe Heywood

Joe Heywood will be at Presque Isle Community Library at 7 p.m. on Tuesday, Aug. 22.

Heywood's "Woods Cop" mysteries are based on the lives of Upper Peninsula conservation officers, and spends about one month a year on patrol with officers in all kinds of weather, all times of day and under sundry conditions. He always carries a ruck with emergency equipment, compass, etc. even for short sorties on foot in the U.P., saying "It's too easy to get under cedars and old growth in an overcast and get hopelessly turned around. I don't use a GPS. When it comes to lost in the woods there seem to be two categories of people: Them that have been and them that will be."



Sept. 14: James Campbell

At 7 p.m. on Thursday, Sept. 14, James Campbell will make an appearance at Camp Jorn YMCA in Manitowish Waters.

Campbell is the author of "The Final Frontiersman," "The Color of War," and "The Ghost Mountain Boys." His latest book is "Braving It: a father, a daughter, and an unforgettable journey into the Alaskan wild." He has written for Outside magazine, National Geographic Adventure, Men's Journal, Audubon, and many other publications.
