The Lakeland volleyball team looked for an upset victory on Senior Night in Minocqua. Non-conference Stratford defeated the Thunderbirds 3-1 (25-22, 22-25, 25-22, 25-20) to conclude the regular season on Thursday.

The Lakeland girls’ swim team had a challenging road conference dual on Thursday to conclude the regular season. Medford beat the Thunderbirds 106-58. The Thunderbirds collected three individual wins, two coming from Olivia Mickle.

Mercer volleyball wins sixth straight conference championship

Senior night and a sixth straight conference title gave the Mercer volleyball team plenty to celebrate in a home match on Thursday. The Tigers beat Bayfield 3-0 (25-11, 25-11, 25-8). Mercer finished 9-0 in the Northern Lights Conference.

Winner of tonight’s Lakeland vs. Tomahawk football game becomes playoff eligible

It all comes down to one game. It’s win and potentially in for Lakeland in a road matchup against Tomahawk. The Thunderbirds (4-4, 2-4 GNC) travel to Tomahawk to take on the Hatchets (3-5, 2-4 GNC) at 7 p.m. tonight. The winner of tonight’s game becomes playoff eligible. A loss would be season-ending.

Thunderbirds fall to Wausau East

The Lakeland football team didn’t have enough consistency in all three phases in a wire-to-wire loss to Wausau East on Friday night. The Lumberjacks beat the Thunderbirds 24-15 in Minocqua. It was the first matchup between the two teams as Great Northern Conference opponents.

The Lakeland boys’ soccer team inched closer to a conference championship with a win over Medford on Thursday night in Minocqua. The Thunderbirds beat the Raiders 5-0. On Saturday, Lakeland took down non-conference Rice Lake 2-0 on the road.

A fifth-set victory gave Lakeland a little momentum into heading the final conference meet of the season. The Thunderbirds beat non-conference Rib Lake 3-2 (24-26, 25-13, 30-28, 20-25, 16-14) on the road on Thursday. The second Great Northern Conference (GNC) Meet took place in Medford on Saturday. Lakeland fell to Medford in four sets before sweeping both Rhinelander and Tomahawk.

Tiger volleyball edges Mellen in matchup of conference’s best

A matchup of undefeated teams in the Northern Lights Conference set the stage for a prime time contest in Mercer on Thursday. The Tigers beat Mellen 3-1 (25-16, 21-25, 25-17, 25-11) to take sole possession of first place in the conference. Mercer also beat Lac Courte Oreilles 3-0 (25-7, 25-12, 25-16) on Tuesday, Oct. 8.

The regular season is coming to a close in the next few weeks. The Lakeland football team will face two new conference opponents beginning with Wausau East tonight. The Thunderbirds (4-3, 2-3 GNC) play the Lumberjacks (4-3, 3-2 GNC) tonight starting at 7 p.m.

The Lakeland Union High School cross country teams traveled to Eagle River where they displayed some fast times. Both the Lakeland boys and girls placed second at the Northland Pines Invite on Tuesday. The girls (57 points) finished second to Medford (49). The boys had a runner-up finish (50) with Rhinelander (42) taking first.

What a difference a month makes. After tying Mosinee last month, the Lakeland boys’ soccer team dominated and won the second matchup with the mercy rule on Thursday. “We grew, there’s no doubt about that,” coach Ihor Myshchyshyn said. “That was the beginning of the season, it was second game of our conference. (We’re) into second part of it so I would love to believe that all that time and hours that boys put in are paying off in their skills and their understandings, in their ability to transition through the field.”

The Thunderbirds responded from two losses last Saturday and got back on track with a road win at Tomahawk on Tuesday. “That means a lot, especially on their home court,” coach Taylor Bruhl said. “The crowds brought it on both sides so it was really fun to play with an energetic crowd.”

Coming off their biggest loss of the season, the Lakeland football team gets an extra day of rest as they prepare for Merrill. The Thunderbirds (3-2, 1-2 GNC) take on the Bluejays (3-2, 1-2 GNC) tomorrow afternoon in Merrill. The Bluejays already have three more regular season wins than they had all of last year (0-9).

Two more wins gave the Lakeland girls’ tennis team momentum as they prepared for yesterday’s Great Northern Conference Meet. The Thunderbirds beat Assumption 6-1 as part of a non-conference invite at Wisconsin Rapids Lincoln High School on Saturday. On Monday, Lakeland beat Marshfield Columbus 6-1 to finish the conference dual season undefeated at 7-0 for a second straight year.

The Lakeland girls’ swim team traveled to De Pere on Saturday to take on two new teams the Thunderbirds haven’t seen this season. “This is a brand new meet,” coach Tierney Edwards said. “Notre Dame Academy reached out to us to see if we were interested in coming down for it. They are hoping to keep the meet and expand it in the future. I was happy to attend.”
