The Tigers played close but couldn’t generate enough offense to pick up their third conference win of the season. The Mercer girls’ basketball team fell 45-31 on the road to Drummond on Friday, Feb. 7. Hurley beat the Tigers 46-34 on Tuesday in Mercer.
The Mystic, Tracy Hartman, stands atop Lakeland Times Prediction Board
I looked to make it back-to-back titles when I once again participated in The Lakeland Times’ annual football Prediction Board. I came up short by the slimmest of margins. Ten panelists set out to become the Prediction Board champion. In the end, it was the Mystic coming out with the win. The Mystic was revealed to be Oneida County Clerk Tracy Hartman. She finished first with a staggering record of 199-86.
Mercer boys’ basketball team falls to Drummond, Hurley
The Mercer boys’ basketball team dropped two straight games against conference opponents. Drummond (12-8, 9-6 Northern Lights) defeated the Tigers 66-35 on Friday, Feb. 7 in Drummond. The Tigers fell 66-19 to Hurley (15-4, 11-3 Northern Lights) in Mercer on Tuesday.

There was plenty to celebrate on a night when the Lakeland girls’ basketball team honored their seniors. The Thunderbirds beat Northland Pines 100-31 in a conference game on Friday at Ted Voigt Court in Minocqua. Kristina Ouimette set Lakeland’s all-time scoring record in the first half, and Lakeland achieved a new program-record for points scored in a game at 100.

T-Bird boys’ swim team sees improved times at conference meet
The Lakeland boys’ swim team made the most of their small squad with faster times and a couple of podium finishes in the Great Northern Conference (GNC) Meet on Friday. The Thunderbirds placed sixth out of six teams with 82 points at the GNC Meet in Rhinelander. The Hodags won the conference title with 463 points.
LUHS boys’ basketball falls to Northland Pines
After building up a lead in the second half, the Lakeland Union High School boys’ basketball team couldn’t finish in a loss to Northland Pines on Friday night. The Eagles (11-8, 5-4 GNC) defeated the Thunderbirds 55-44 in a conference game in Eagle River.

For the first time in a long time, the Lakeland Nordic ski teams didn’t bring home a conference championship. The Lakeland girls finished second out of three qualified teams with 13 points at the Northern Conference Meet in Cable on Tuesday. The Spooner girls took first with nine points.

The Mercer boys’ basketball team couldn’t end their losing streak with one non-conference and one conference game. The Tigers fell 86-36 on Monday to non-conference Wakefield-Marenisco, Mich. on the road. South Shore beat the Tigers 63-45 in Mercer on Tuesday.

The Lakeland boys’ basketball team played right with Medford for the majority of the game, but a late run in the first half helped the Raiders get a win. The Thunderbirds fell 58-46 to the Raiders (9-6, 6-1 GNC) on Friday night in Medford.
LUHS boys’ wrestling team drops two conference duals
The Lakeland boys’ wrestling team came up a little short in two more conference duals on Thursday. The Thunderbirds fell 42-27 to Rhinelander and 40-32 to Antigo in a Great Northern Conference (GNC) quad. On Saturday, Lakeland placed 17th out of 20 teams with 122.5 points at the Wausau East Lumberjack Invite.

The Lakeland Union High School boys’ swim team continued to get faster with another double dual meet. On Thursday, Tomahawk beat Lakeland 91-37, and Rhinelander defeated the Thunderbirds 137-21 in a non-conference double dual at Rhinelander.

The Lakeland boys’ hockey team looked to get back on track with a weekend non-conference tournament in Hayward. They finished on a positive not with a rare shootout win. The Thunderbirds fell 3-1 to Hayward on Friday. Then, Lakeland posted a 2-2 (1-0) win in a shootout against the Webster co-op on Saturday morning.

The final home meet for the Lakeland boys’ swim team saw them go up against Rhinelander and Antigo in a double dual in Minocqua. “More people’s more competition, which is always more fun,” Braelen Hesch said about the double dual.

The Mercer boys’ basketball team had one of their better nights offensively in a conference loss at home. Mellen defeated the Tigers 87-51 on Tuesday night. It was Mercer’s second-highest points scored in a game this season (60 vs. Butternut on Dec. 17, 2024).
