Mercer’s track and field teams opened their seasons with a trip to Ashland on Thursday. The Mercer girls placed 10th out of 12 teams with 24 points at the Oredocker Small School Indoor Invite. The Mercer boys ended up 10th out of 13 teams with 11 points.

Adam Hammes triumphant again on Disc Golf Pro Tour

Shoots 30-under, wins Waco Annual Charity Open

Adam Hammes is making a name for himself on the Disc Golf Pro Tour (DGPT). He took home the trophy last weekend in Texas. Hammes, a Lakeland Union High School Class of 2017 graduate, won the Waco Annual Charity Open. The Pro Tour event took place Friday, March 14 through Sunday, March 16 in Waco, Texas.

Junior Nationals brings together some of the top junior-level skiers in the United States. Lakeland Union High School senior Stella Meza and eighth-grader Brayden Kelly got a chance to put their skills to the test against the best.

Full roster expected soon

With Spring Break in full swing, the Lakeland softball team only drew a couple of student-athletes to the first day of practice. Three student-athletes attended the first practice of the season on Monday. Those three got plenty of reps whether it was fielding grounders or hitting in the cage.

Inexperienced LUHS bowling team ‘did the best we could’

The Lakeland Union High School bowling team didn’t experience a lot of team success in a rebuilding year. The 2024-25 season featured an inexperienced lineup with a new varsity coach. They returned only one bowler from last year’s varsity team.

Every year when the calendar turns to March, a notification pops up on my phone. It lets me know it’s time for March Madness. This week, the National Collegiate Athletic Association (NCAA) Men’s and Women’s Basketball Tournaments begin. Selection Sunday took place two days ago as teams learned their fate.

Popular prep sports in the winter include basketball, hockey and wrestling. Lakeland Union High School had one student-athlete represent them in the sport of alpine skiing. Alpine skiing is a sport that students can participate in at Lakeland. Sophomore Braxton Teichmiller took on the hills and mountains of Wisconsin/Michigan for a second straight season.

The Lakeland Union High School (LUHS) track and field teams put together their own little combine inside the LUHS fieldhouse to open up the first practice on Monday. A group of 70-plus student-athletes came together to open the spring sports season. However, numbers can change between now and the first meet of the season.

Season review: Lakeland boys’ swim team back in action

The Lakeland boys’ swim team made their return to the pool after taking a year off. They got better as the season went along. The Thunderbirds placed sixth out of six teams in the Great Northern Conference (GNC) with a record of 0-5. They scored two total conference points, also sixth in the conference.

Some things in life are not meant to be. The Lakeland girls’ basketball team’s season came to a sudden and halting end on Thursday. The Thunderbirds fell 59-47 to Rice Lake in a WIAA Division 2 sectional semifinal game in Ashland.

Tiger boys’ basketball drops playoff game to Owen-Withee

The Mercer boys’ basketball team saw their season come to an end following a playoff loss on Thursday. Owen-Withee, the No. 3 seed, beat 14th-seeded Mercer 96-33 in a WIAA Division 5 regional quarterfinal game in Owen.

A hot shooting night by one of Rice Lake’s seniors sent the Lakeland boys’ basketball team packing for the 2024-25 season. The seventh-seeded Rice Lake Warriors beat Lakeland, the No. 10 seed, 78-56 in a WIAA Division 2 regional quarterfinal game in Rice Lake on Tuesday.

A trip to state was decided by the smallest of margins as the Lakeland boys’ wrestling team competed in a sectional meet on Saturday. The Thunderbirds finished tied for 16th out of 23 teams with seven points at a WIAA Division 2 sectional meet in Amery.

Looking to bolster their résumé one more time, the Lakeland Union High School boys’ basketball team took on Wausau Newman on Thursday. The Thunderbirds beat the Fighting Cardinals 64-50 in their final non-conference and home game of the regular season in Minocqua.

Lady Tigers beat Bayfield and Mellen by combined two points

The Mercer girls’ basketball team is entering the playoffs with momentum after winning their final two games of the regular season. The Tigers played back-to-back-to-back games and went 2-1. Drummond beat the Tigers 43-30 on Wednesday in Mercer. Then, Mercer traveled to Bayfield, winning 41-40 on Thursday. The next day, the Tigers beat Mellen in Mellen by a score of 42-41.

The Mercer boys’ basketball team lost two more conference games last week. First, the Tigers fell 60-31 to Drummond on Wednesday in Mercer. Then, Mellen beat Mercer 87-20 in Mellen on Friday.

A select number of Lakeland skiers had one more chance to accumulate points in the latest Great Lakes Junior National Qualifier (JNQ). Four ended up making a postseason trip. Stella Meza and Brayden Kelly qualified for Junior Nationals in Soldier Hollow, Utah. Jennings Kern and Miranda Schneider made the Canadian Nationals in Canmore, Alberta.

The Mercer girls’ basketball team ended their losing streak with a convincing win last Friday. First, Bessemer, Mich. beat the Tigers 36-31 on Wednesday, Feb. 12 in Michigan. The Tigers defeated Lac Courte Oreilles on the road by a score of 49-20 on Friday, Feb. 14.

Mercer boys’ basketball team drops two games

The Mercer boys’ basketball team couldn’t score enough points to keep up with two different opponents last week. The Tigers fell 75-18 to Bessemer, Mich. on Wednesday, Feb. 12. Lac Courte Oreilles beat the Tigers 61-33 on Friday, Feb. 14.

The Thunderbirds put the exclamation point on their conference season with another 12-0 finish. The Lakeland girls’ basketball team beat Rhinelander 70-15 on Friday night in Minocqua. The Thunderbirds have now won the Great Northern Conference (GNC) title undefeated for three consecutive seasons and have won 41 straight conference games.

The Lakeland boys’ wrestling team advanced a couple of Thunderbirds to sectionals after a regional meet in Hayward. The Thunderbirds placed 10th out of 13 teams in a WIAA Division 2 regional meet on Saturday. They scored 71 points. Hayward/Northwood won the regional with 251 points.

For the first time in over two years, the Lakeland boys’ hockey team couldn’t score a goal in the Great Northern Conference (GNC) tournament final. The Thunderbirds had no problems getting by non-conference Ashland by a score of 6-0 on Thursday in Minocqua. Lakeland then lost 4-0 to Northland Pines in the GNC tournament third-place game on Saturday in Rhinelander.

The third period sank any chance the Lakeland boys’ hockey team had of beating Mosinee in Mosinee. The Thunderbirds fell 5-1 to Mosinee (14-8-1, 6-1 GNC) on Tuesday night in a Great Northern Conference tournament semifinal game.

The Tigers played close but couldn’t generate enough offense to pick up their third conference win of the season. The Mercer girls’ basketball team fell 45-31 on the road to Drummond on Friday, Feb. 7. Hurley beat the Tigers 46-34 on Tuesday in Mercer.

Mercer boys’ basketball team falls to Drummond, Hurley

The Mercer boys’ basketball team dropped two straight games against conference opponents. Drummond (12-8, 9-6 Northern Lights) defeated the Tigers 66-35 on Friday, Feb. 7 in Drummond. The Tigers fell 66-19 to Hurley (15-4, 11-3 Northern Lights) in Mercer on Tuesday.

The Mystic, Tracy Hartman, stands atop Lakeland Times Prediction Board

I looked to make it back-to-back titles when I once again participated in The Lakeland Times’ annual football Prediction Board. I came up short by the slimmest of margins. Ten panelists set out to become the Prediction Board champion. In the end, it was the Mystic coming out with the win. The Mystic was revealed to be Oneida County Clerk Tracy Hartman. She finished first with a staggering record of 199-86.

There was plenty to celebrate on a night when the Lakeland girls’ basketball team honored their seniors. The Thunderbirds beat Northland Pines 100-31 in a conference game on Friday at Ted Voigt Court in Minocqua. Kristina Ouimette set Lakeland’s all-time scoring record in the first half, and Lakeland achieved a new program-record for points scored in a game at 100.
