LETTERS/OPINIONS
Forever grateful for firefighters in Flambeau and everywhere
To the Editor: Shortly after midnight on Aug. 26, we received a call from the Vilas County Sheriff’s Office informing us that our cabin in Lac du Flambeau was on fire. A call you never want to receive.
The definition of Kamala Harris
What Kamala Harris has managed to do in a month is totally redefine herself in the eyes of American voters. She went from being a mostly disapproved of vice president to being a positively viewed candidate in the space of four weeks.
Hidin’ Harris
To call the last eight weeks in presidential politics unprecedented would be a wild understatement. It was just over two months ago when Joe Biden — a man deemed highly successful and mentally sharp by our legacy media — took to the stage to debate Donald Trump, and promptly expired.
Fact check: RFK Jr.
Presidential candidate RFK Jr. suspended his campaign last week and endorsed Donald Trump. I disagree with Kennedy about a lot. But at least he was willing to talk to people who disagree with him.
Religious freedom on campus
“Jewish students were excluded from portions of the UCLA campus because they refused to denounce their faith. This fact is so unimaginable and so abhorrent to our constitutional guarantee of religious freedom that it bears repeating.”

Lakeland Times: Our View
Earlier this year, European Commission president Ursula von der Leyen, who was running for re-election, promised that if voters followed her off a cliff, she would dutifully reward them when they hit the rocky bottom, provided they survived.
Reader criticizes Lakeland Times for bias, warns of Project 2025 threat
To the Editor: It’s no secret that The Lakeland Times has a captive audience and promotes a heavy-skewed conservative view of politics in America.
Not all superheroes wear capes
To the Editor: I met a superhero today (actually it was four). It was enlightening. This superhero does not fly or have super powers or protect us from evil villains.
Hiker’s hero hailed
To the Editor: I want to express my deepest appreciation to the woman who found my fanny pack on the Bearskin Trail on Aug. 6. I had left it on the side of the trail, by accident, while on a hike. Inside was my wallet and cellphone.

The REAL Kamala Harris
Who is Kamala Harris? What does she believe? It’s hard to know. She won’t take questions from reporters. Instead, she reads from a teleprompter and gives the same speech again and again.
Minocqua Public Library used book sale a huge success
To the Editor: The Minocqua Public Library Used Book Sale was held Aug. 2-3. A special thank you goes to the town of Minocqua for the use of the community gym for the donation days/set-up and two-day sale. Many thanks to our crew of volunteers who put in many hours …
Tower of Babble: It’s a lot worse than ‘weird’
On the bright side, the Trump era has doubtless reinforced the age-old nostrum that in America, absolutely anyone can be president. Shallow, unread and uninterested, fundamentally infantile and deeply narcissistic, Donald Trump’s enduring lesson to America is this: just say anything.
Kamala Harris’ authoritarian ‘joy’
We’ve been told, over and over and over again, that Kamala Harris is the candidate of “joy.” Tim Walz, upon accepting his vice presidential nomination, thanked her for “bringing back the joy.” Rolling Stone gushed that Harris’ “new politics of joy is the best way to fight fascism.” The New …
Mercer EMS study sparks community concerns
To the Editor: Attention towns of Mercer, Oma, and Springstead The Mercer town board has initiated a feasibility study on EMS services, which raises significant concerns for our communities. This study could potentially lead to the termination of Mercer Area Ambulance & Rescue (MAAR) as it currently exists.
