Halverson responds to ATV proponents

To the Editor: First of all, I do not disdain motorized sports. I welcome and support snowmobiling; as do the towns of Boulder Junction, Manitowish Waters, and Winchester. I also support water skiing and most other motorized water sports. I do not support ATVing where the town government and the …

Reader's Rage: Sick and tired of ATVs/UTVs on roads!

To the Editor: I am so sick and tired of reading about ATV/UTV clubs and owners demanding their machines be allowed to operate on various town and county highways that I could scream! How do these selfish people justify their narrow interests over my safety and everyone else who drives, …

Gullibles’ travels: Trump routs America. Americans yawn

The Supreme Court’s narrow vote to permit a New York state judge to formally pronounce a practically meaningless sentence on Donald Trump pursuant to a jury verdict convicting him of 34 felonies was hailed by some as promising news, that there remain institutional guardrails constraining the 47th president from doing …

Anarchists versus libertarians

“Donald Trump will be a tyrant!” So my neighbors claim. I live in Manhattan. Feel for me. Yes, Trump says wild things, like riffing about “terminating” parts of the U.S. Constitution.

Lakeland Times: Our View

The “new journalist” — meaning drug-induced crackpot — Hunter S. Thompson once wrote a novel entitled Fear and Loathing in Las Vegas about two protagonists who pursue the American Dream in Las Vegas, of all places, using drugs as their fuel.

ATV club: Noise debate misses key points

To the Editor: Mr. Halverson’s Dec. 31 letter to the editor on ATV noise, while technically accurate, misses the point of the argument. That is; the ATV/UTV “sport” is a state regulated, legal form of outdoor recreation in Wisconsin.

The age of censorship is ending

This week, in a stunning volte-face, Mark Zuckerberg announced that Facebook would now be revising its censorship policies to accord with his older vision of free speech.

The routine of the rule of law

This year, Jan. 6 was a routine day. Congress certified the election of Donald Trump. They did it in 30 minutes, instead of the overnight session in the wake of riots four years ago. As one Democrat put it, there were no election deniers on the Democratic side. The rule …

Carter’s legacy and the true meaning of hospice care

To the Editor: The passing of President Jimmy Carter marks the end of an admirable life dedicated to service, compassion and humanity. While we mourn his loss, we can also reflect on the impact he made, even in his final chapter, by helping to shift the conversation around hospice care.

Concerns over noise: Are ATV critics ignoring reality

To the Editor: Noise, Really? I read Mr Halverson’s letter in Dec. 31 edition of The Lakeland Times about ATV noise. It is interesting how he can quote facts out of the code of regulations yet totally ignore the “real life” facts.

ATV economics: Balancing the books

To the Editor: The 2024 Penn State study, “Economic impact of All Terrain Vehicles (ATVs) on local economies: a literature review,” states: “The findings indicate that existing studies have assessed the economic impact of ATVs solely based on gross expenditures, lacking comprehensive inclusion of the costs associated with ATV damages …

Crude awakening: 15 months on, Oct. 7 remains a brutal wake-up call

Shamsud-Din Jabbar’s mass murder of innocents in New Orleans on New Year’s Day, “inspired” by ISIS’ exhortations to wage war against “non-believers,” reminded Americans about the existence of evil. In our comfort, in our security, we don’t see evil up close all that frequently.

Victimhood U

Colleges went mad. They charge students big bucks and then make them feel guilty. My new video looks at a new documentary called “The Coddling of the American Mind.” It persuasively suggests that today, young people are anxious and depressed because “adults” at their schools brainwashed them.

Lakeland Times: Our View

Watching the U.S. House of Representatives elect a speaker this past week was an interesting exercise, primarily because it offered glimpses into the emerging coalition politics of the right as we head into Trump 2.0.
