Ruth lames Homan, 100, formerly of Deerbrook and Antigo, passed away peacefully on January 26, 2025 at Milestone Senior Living in Woodruff, with her husband of 78 years, Walter, by her side.
Ruth was born on December 28, 1924 in Pearson, to Victor and Emma lames. The family moved to Antigo in 1934 where Ruth attended and graduated from Antigo High School in 1943. With WWII in full swing, she found work as a ship welder in the Sturgeon Bay shipyard until she was able to enlist. At that time, she joined the U.S. Navy as a WAVE, and after completing her boot camp, was stationed in Sanford, Fla. It was in Sanford that she met Walter Homan. Ruth and Walter were both reassigned to Miami, where they became better acquainted, working together on aircraft. Shortly after being discharged, they returned to Walter’s home town of Sinking Springs, Penn., were married in 1946 then returned to Antigo, where they spent the majority of their lives raising their four children. After Walter's retirement they adventured to St Cloud, Fla. for five years, then spent another seven years in Alamogordo, N.M., making many good friends over those years. In 1991 they returned to Deerbrook where they remained until September 2023 when they moved into Milestone Senior Living in Woodruff.
Ruth is survived by her husband Walter (Bupsy), daughters Kathy (Mike) Fossen of Arbor Vitae, Delores Brown of Lewisville, N.C., and sons John (Shirley) of Tularosa, N.M. and Jim (Ruth) of Antigo. Ruth is also survived by 10 grandchildren, two great-grandchildren, six nieces and two nephews. She was preceded in death by two sisters: Faith (Lester) Schremp and Elizabeth (Leigh) Hovey, and two brothers: Pat (Doreen) and Bill lames.
Ruth was a wonderful wife and mother with a lot of energy and felt she had lived a busy and good life. She enjoyed gardening, sewing, knitting, reading and traveling. She also played the violin, piano and guitar, and had a love for history and learning. As a Jehovah’s Witness she devoted herself to sharing Bible truths and principles with anyone interested.
The family of Ruth Homan offers a very special thank you to the Aspirus Hospice nurses and the entire Milestone staff for all the amazing care and compassion they provided to both Ruth and family. Also, many thanks to Strasser-Roller Funeral Home in Antigo, for helping with all final arrangements and cremation. Burial will be in Elmwood Cemetery in Antigo at a later date.
