Donald J. Madden, 98, Wisconsin Rapids, died Sunday, January 19, 2025 at his Wisconsin Rapids home.
A Mass of Christian burial will take place at 11 a.m. on Saturday, Feb. 8, at St. Bernard Catholic Church in Abbotsford. Father Keith Kitzhaber will officiate. Interment will take place in the spring at Pine Hill Cemetery in Curtiss. Please join the family for visitation at the church beginning at 10 a.m. until the time of the funeral service. Military honors will be provided by the Colby VFW Post #2227. The Maurina-Schilling Funeral Home in Abbotsford is entrusted with the arrangements.
He was born July 2, 1926, in Wausau, eldest of the late John and Sophie (Londo) Madden. Don married Fern “Toby” Buchholz on April 14, 1956. They lived in West Allis, Milwaukee and Cedarburg before retiring to their dream home in Winchester. The couple adored their Winchester home on Lake Adelaide and lived there for 30 years before moving to Wisconsin Rapids in 2018 to live with their daughter. Fern preceded Donald in death.
Don worked as a skilled machinist for Falk Corporation in Milwaukee for more than 30 years before retiring. He loved fishing, hunting, gardening, building things and reading. He was a member of Our Lady Queen of Heaven Catholic Church in Wisconsin Rapids.
Don was a WWII veteran, serving in the Navy’s construction battalion, better known as the Seabees. He became an active member of the American Legion for more than 50 years becoming a lifetime member. He served as post commander and state chaplain.
Survivors include his daughters: Sandy (Tom Baker) Madden of Minocqua, Karen Madden of Wisconsin Rapids, and Nancy (Brian) Nelson of Wisconsin Rapids; two great-grandchildren: Oakley Nardi and Finnegan Dombrowski; brother: John (Sharon) Madden; sister: Jeanette Goede; sister-in-law: Joan Madden; as well as many nieces and nephews.
Don was preceded in death by his parents; wife; grandson, Terry Dombrowski; son-in-law, Brian Nelson; brothers: Eugene, Raymond, Gerald and Patrick Madden; sisters-in law: Evelyn (Joseph) Daniels and Alvina (John) Maldonis; and brothers-in law: Karl (Thelma) Buchholz, Robert (Phyllis) Buchholz and Warren Buchholz.
