Richard N. Hansen, 83, passed away peacefully in Woodruff on May 13, 2023, with his family at his side. He was born November 29, 1939, in Marshfield to Norman and Alice Hansen; he later lived in Waukesha and Madison. There, he completed his bachelor of science in chemistry at the University of Wisconsin, was commissioned in the US Army, and married his high school sweetheart, MaryJane (Jinkins) Hansen, all in 1961. He served 20 years in the Army, retiring as a lieutenant colonel. He worked an additional 17 years as the personnel director for LaRabida Children’s Hospital in Chicago and another five years as camping director for the Northeast Illinois Council, Boy Scouts of America. As he was fond of saying, his third retirement finally stuck, and he settled in Woodruff in 2006. Throughout his life, he lived in many places — Wisconsin, Colorado, Washington DC, Texas, Massachusetts, Kentucky, Maryland, Germany, and Illinois — but the Northwoods was always “home.”
Richard (Dick to all who knew him) was dedicated to finding ways to be of service — to his country and to his fellow man. After retirement, he continued volunteering with the Boy Scouts, Lakeland Retirement Foundation, Church of the Pines, Goodwill, Northwoods Shrine Club, and Island City Masonic Lodge #330. He was also an avid fisherman and hunter — when not volunteering he could usually be found on a lake or in a blind.
He is survived by one brother Donald (Linda) Hansen, his sons Allen (Denise) Hansen and Keven Hansen, two grandchildren Ron Hansen and Allisen Hansen, and one great-grandchild Kyrie. He was preceded in death by his parents, wife, and two brothers, William and Ken.
Memorial services will be held at Calvary Lutheran Church in Minocqua on Saturday, June 10 at 11 a.m.; light refreshments and fellowship to follow. In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to Island City Masonic Lodge #330, any Masonic or Shrine charity, or the Wisconsin Alzheimer’s Institute. Bolger Funeral Home is assisting the family, www.bolgerfuneral.com for condolences.
