Tony attended grade school in Wonder Lake, Ill., and in 1994, graduated from high school in Park Falls, followed by two years at University of Wisconsin–Stevens Point. He left school to take care of his father in Springstead.
In 2001, he moved to Lake Tomahawk, where he and his former wife began building a home before they divorced. He and their children enjoyed living and working there on the hobby farm he started in 2014. Prior to that, he worked in dredging, landscaping, and construction. He also worked at caretaking properties and doing things for many friends and neighbors. He was fond of saying, “Friends help friends. It’s what they do.”
Tony excelled as a recovery coach, which he took great pride in, including his recent certification as a peer specialist by the Wisconsin Department of Health Services. In 2019, he was awarded the Service of Excellence Governor’s Award by Gov. Tony Evers for his work with the AmeriCorps Recovery Corps.
He loved the outdoors and spent much time hunting, fishing, camping, and building the perfect campfire. In winter, he looked forward to race season, and he truly enjoyed working with Joe Schneider on the legendary Outlaw 600 snowmobile team.
His kids meant the world to Tony, and he was happily and deeply involved in their lives through various pursuits and family activities. He was accomplished in many ways, and raising children who are wise, thoughtful and kind is one of his greatest accomplishments. His sense of humor and ability to tease with affection were a delight. He is already missed by all who knew and loved him.
Tony was a kind and strong man, always thoughtful and insightful. His strength was evident when he survived stomach cancer earlier this year by being, as his doctor proudly said, both a “medical miracle” and a “medical mystery” for how well he beat the cancer.
He is survived by his daughter, Lexis Leman, sons Colton Leman and Tucker Leman; also by his sister Laura Schleicher, his brothers Edward (Jenny) Leman, Douglas Leman, and Danny Leman; his significant other, Heather Kurilla, along with Heather’s daughters, Ava, Liliana, and Holly Kurilla; and his former wife, Crystal Leman. He was preceded in death by his parents and his sister Sherri Leman.
Visitation for Tony will be held on Saturday, June 17, 2023, from 10 a.m. to noon at the Carlson Funeral Home in Rhinelander.
