Elaine was a homemaker, taking care of her twins on most days, but during WWII, she saw an opportunity to help others as well and became a registered nurse after being trained by the American Red Cross.
In the years following retirement, Elaine joined the Pikettes, a quilting group, making quilts for family and friends. In 1980, her husband, Matthew Calderwood, passed away. After many years, the children of her long-time friend, Donald Jordan, gave permission for their dad to date Elaine, and in 1999, they married and moved to Springstead. After 15 years of marriage, Don preceded her in death in 2014.
Elaine will be missed by her daughter, Lorraine Karpinen; grandchildren, Matthew, Trina, Jamie, and Ellie; and six great-grandchildren. In addition to her parents and husbands, Elaine is preceded in death by her son, Duane Calderwood.
A private celebration of life will be held by the family this summer.
The family would like to thank the entire staff at Lakeshore, Lake Tomahawk for their exceptional care of Elaine during the last three years.
Bolger Cremation & Funeral Services is assisting the family, www.bolgerfuneral.com.
