Janet H. Bradley, 91, of Bonita Springs, Fla., died peacefully on Saturday, June 3, 2023, in her home. Her loving family and exceptionally loyal caregivers were by her side throughout her end-of-life journey.
She was born in January of 1932 in Albany, N.Y., daughter of the late Wilbur and Lilla Hallenbeck.
A New York state native, Janet grew up in Selkirk. She earned an associate degree in retail business management from the State University of New York in Utica, where she met her future husband, Nat Bradley. After college Janet accepted a sales and marketing position with Myers Department Store. Her natural beauty made her the obvious choice to model clothing for the store’s advertising publications.
Married in 1954, Janet was on her way to becoming a devoted wife, ultimate mother, and eventually a beloved grandmother and great-grandmother, affectionately known as Johnnie.
After various moves throughout the eastern seaboard, Nat was transferred to Chicago where he and Janet settled in Glen Ellyn, Ill., and raised their family. In the mid-70s Janet and Nat built their cherished Northern Wisconsin retreat and named it Canthook.
In 1983 Nat was transferred from Chicago to Tokyo. Always ready to meet a challenge, Janet adapted quickly and developed a deep appreciation for Japanese culture. During one of the four-plus years there, she successfully chaired the College Women’s Association of Japan annual Print Show at the Tokyo American Club.
In retirement, time was split between Canthook, in Hazelhurst, and Bonita Springs, Fla. Janet was the consummate hostess; she was a fabulous cook and made everyone feel warm and welcome in her home.
Johnnie was at her best in the company of her grandchildren. She loved spoiling them with attention, teaching them to play cards, and always eager to be involved in anything they were interested in.
Although her time was spent primarily in the Midwest and Florida, Janet retained her love for the East Coast, particularly Cape Cod, where she enjoyed the ocean, the salt air, and lobster dinners.
Janet was a knowledgeable antique collector and eventually opened her own shop in Glen Ellyn. Other interests included traveling, walking, reading, crossword puzzles, cross stitch, perusing the classified ads, bowling, the Chicago Cubs, watching golf, rooting for the Green Bay Packers, and enjoying her “happy place” overlooking the lake at Canthook.
She is survived by her husband of 69 years, Nathaniel F. “Nat” Bradley III; her son, Nathaniel F. “Brad” Bradley IV, and wife Lisa; her daughter Anne Slack and husband Brian; her grandchildren Nathaniel F. “Nate” Bradley V and wife Anne, Quinn Getz and husband Chip, Trevor and Taylor Slack; her great-grandchildren, Henry, Lily, Crosby and Cooper Getz and Frances Bradley; her sister Jean Tinapp (the late Richard Tinapp).
Elegant yet selfless and modestly influential, she loved her country, was a true friend to many, and set an impeccable example for her family. She will remain forever in the hearts of those who knew and loved her.
