Dolores grew up in the Chicago area.
An accomplished equestrian at an early age, she won many horse shows across the country. She further went on to audition for the lead in the movie “National Velvet” (1944) along with Elizabeth Taylor who secured the role.
Dee graduated from Steinmetz High School. While attending the University of Illinois, Navy Pier campus she met the love of her life, Harry. They married in 1949. In 1959, they moved to Warrenville, Ill. where they raised their family of three boys.
Prior to moving to Arbor Vitae in 1990, they enjoyed vacationing in the Northwoods starting in the late 1950’s. Elbert’s Resort in St Germain was a particular favorite of theirs in the 60s and 70s vacationing with her sister Joan and her family. Many happy family memories were made there. The Northwoods had always held a very special place in their hearts and when retirement time came, there was no doubt as to where they were going to live.
When they made the move they were greeted by their two sons, Mike and Tim, who were already living here and expanding their business, Minocqua Sport Rentals. Harry and Dee helped out at the shop occasionally where they met a lot of great people, many becoming friends.
Dee was an avid fisherwoman who especially liked fishing for muskie. She also loved to read, cook and play bingo.
At the time of her husband Harry’s death in 2019, they had been married for almost 70 years. She was preceded in death by her parents and her sister Patricia.
She is survived by her loving sister Joan Allen; children: Patrick Carroll, Michael Carroll (Shelley), and Timothy Carroll (Pamela); grandchildren: Christina (Dan) Strissel, Patrick (Kirsten) Carroll Jr., Dan (Meagan) Carroll, Jenna (Craig) Clure, Jessica Carroll, Kayela (Dan) Carroll, Tyler Carroll, Megan Kriese; and nine great-grandchildren.
Visitation for Dee will be held on Saturday, Dec. 3, from 11 a.m. to noon at Nimsgern Funeral Home Chapel with a funeral service at noon and burial to follow at Sunset Memorial Cemetery. A luncheon will be held at the funeral home following the services.
