Keith was born in Elgin on September 4, 1929 to Walter and Hildur (Johnson) Bohlin. He graduated from Hopps School (a one-room schoolhouse), Abbott Junior High and from Elgin High School in 1947. He was a talented football and baseball player and played for the Elgin Torpedoes after high school. After a tryout with the Cubs and an invitation to train at a southern training camp, he decided to stay in Elgin where he married his high school sweetheart (Shortie), Carol Miller, on October 29, 1949. He poured many sidewalks, driveways, and foundations in the Elgin area after starting Bohlin Concrete in 1956. While in Elgin he was active at the First Presbyterian Church, Camp Edwards, Larkin High School Booster Club, Little League and Teener League. In 1974, a lot was purchased on a lake near Minocqua. He thought, “Build it, they will come” and come they did. In 1988, they made the permanent move north to “The Lake.” The door was always open and it was a favorite place for the family to gather. In Minocqua, he was an active member of the Manitowish Waters Community Presbyterian Church, Levis and Lace square dance club, and delivered Meals on Wheels for many years.
Keith spent his working years building foundations for homes, yet the strongest foundation he ever built was the one his family is built on, with Carol by his side. He supported his children, grandchildren, and great grandchildren with encouraging words and attending events across the country.
He will be remembered and deeply missed by Carol, his children: Cindy (Craig) Alexander of McLean, Ill.; Shirley (Jim) Willis of Neenah; Gary (Cindy) Bohlin of Tucson, Ariz.; and Greg (Sue) Bohlin of Elgin, Ill.; grandchildren: Chad (Denise) Alexander, Caryn (Jim) Tsagalis, Curt (Ashley) Alexander, Kevin (Denise) Willis, Brian (Nicole) Willis, Kendra (Nate) Clements, Nathan (Ashley) Bohlin, Joel (Sarah) Bohlin, Keith (Katie) Bohlin, Mark (Victoria) Bohlin, Daniel (Carrie) Bohlin, Zach (Lexi) Bohlin, and Luke Bohlin.
29 children call him Gpa (great-grandpa) and he also left lasting memories with nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by his parents; father-in-law and mother-in-law, Sefton and Louise (Stanton) Miller; his sister, Elaine (Sonny) Siems; his brothers, Wallace (Lillian) Bohlin and Donald Bohlin; sister-in-law and brother-in-law, Mary Lou (Harry) Buhr.
The family would like to sincerely thank the entire staff at Sherman Hospital (2nd and 5th floors) for their care of Keith and family that stayed by his side and also Advocate Hospice for their compassion, support, and love.
Visitation will be from 9 to 11 a.m. on Monday, Dec. 19, at the First Presbyterian Church in Elgin followed by a Celebration of his Life at 11 a.m. Cubs apparel would be appropriate and appreciated.
In lieu of flowers, memorials may be directed to Camp Edwards at N8901 Army Trail Road, East Troy, Wisconsin, 53120 and Advocate Charitable Foundation (hospice) at 3075 Highland Parkway, Suite 600, Downers Grove, IL 60515.
