“I liked makeup initially, and got a passion for skincare, and just kind of went with it,” she said.
For the next 19 years, Sloan practiced cosmetology in salons across the Midwest and even the nation, holding aesthetician licenses in five different states. She worked for Aveda in Minnesota, Exhale Spa in Chicago and Fiori Spa in Houston, the last of which saw numerous celebrities and professional athletes as clients.
In the wake of a certain pandemic, however, Sloan knew in June of 2020 that she needed to come home. After a year practicing in Minocqua, she is finally running a solo operation at Sloans Spa, which opened at a U.S. Highway 51 locale this May.
“Everything was shut down in Houston. My jobs were canceled,” Sloan recalled of the initial lockdown. “So I moved home. I always wanted to open a spot here … I was with a collective of people before, and now I’m just here myself. This is my first business.”
The Highway 51 location is especially important to Sloan because her brother’s mother-in-law, Linda Swentzel, owns the nearby Cheese Board, and Sloan had always liked the idea of neighboring family businesses.
“I thought it’d be so cute to have a little spa in the boardwalk shops, and just have a skincare room,” she said.
At Sloans Spa, customers will find a variety of custom facial options, including chemical peels and the popular HydraFacial treatment. Additional offered services include waxing, lash lifting and tinting, not to mention an infrared sauna that heats up to 149 degrees Fahrenheit.
Plenty of cosmetic products and accessories are for sale, as well.
“I have perfumes, some jewelry, some lash enhancements and CBD,” Sloan listed. “Some at-home light therapies, some different skincare masks, some body scrubs.”
Sloan tries to carry products made by local and Lakeland-connected vendors, such as Wisconsin perfume entrepreneur Kristi Moe and Sloan’s fellow LUHS alum Amanda McDonald, who sells jewelry on Etsy.
“(Customers) love my facials, the vibe in my spa,” she said. “They feel like it’s very modern, something different for Minocqua.”
