Purchase of Minocqua's Book World store in the works
Bauer expects to close Feb. 1
Mike Bauer, owner of A Step Above in Minocqua and Ages Past Antiques in Woodruff, said he expects to close on the downtown property Feb. 1.
Until then, though, he's hesitant to get into many of the details of what his plans are for the store.
Book World, which opened its first store in Rhinelander in 1976 and grew to become the fourth largest book store chain in the country, announced in October the closure of its 45 stores in Wisconsin, Michigan, Minnesota, Iowa, Illinois, North Dakota and Missouri.
Most of the company's stores, 20 in Wisconsin, include locations in Minocqua, Rhinelander and Eagle River.
There was plenty of reaction to the closing of the Minocqua Book World store on the Lakeland Times Facebook page at the time, several people commenting the store was one of those Minocqua businesses they enjoyed frequenting during the summer months when they stay in the area.
That summer business Book World enjoyed over the years was acknowledged in comments made at the time of the announcement by Book World's senior vice-president, Mark DuPont.
"Minocqua has been one of our best stores," he told The Lakeland Times.
