A Lac du Flambeau man was taken into custody Sunday evening following an incident in Lac du Flambeau. According to a press release from TJ Bill, chief of the Lac Du Flambeau Tribal Police Department, tribal police and the Vilas County Sheriff’s Department received a request for assistance from a homeowner on State Highway 70 who reported that Bert LaBarge, Jr., 50, was threatening the homeowner’s family members in her residence and refusing to leave the residence.
Vilas County board approves salary increase for finance director

The Vilas County board Tuesday approved a resolution calling for a salary increase for county finance director Darcy Smith. The resolution states that under the county’s existing compensation policy, “a market adjustment can be made when required.”
St. Germain man dies in head-on crash on Hwy. 155
A St. Germain man died in a head-on crash the evening of Memorial Day. According to a press release from the Vilas County Sheriff’s Office, the dispatch center received a 911 call just after 7 p.m. reporting a head on collision between a sport utility vehicle (SUV) and a motorcycle on State Highway 155 just south of South Lost Lake Drive in St. Germain. The caller reported the operator of the motorcycle, later identified as Eric Powell, 64, was not alert.

A member of the tribal council for the Lac du Flambeau Band of Lake Superior Chippewa Indians had a cash bond of $1,000 set by Vilas County judge Martha Milanowski Tuesday.

There were no injuries Saturday in an incident involving a four-seat, single-engine Commander 114TC at Lakeland Airport in Arbor Vitae. Arbor Vitae fire chief Mike Van Meter said the aircraft, piloted by Kenneth Matson of Highland Park, Ill., was attempting to land from the east.

The Minocqua town board met for a little more than 15 minutes Tuesday, appointing Joe Hegge and Angie Maki to the board of directors for the Minocqua public library. One man cited for disorderly conduct during MBC protest
A Green Bay man was cited for disorderly conduct by Minocqua police during a protest in the vicinity of the Minocqua Brewing Company (MBC) on May 2. MBC owner Kirk Bangstad had a beer tasting at noon that day and according to a press release from Minocqua police chief Glenn Janzer, officers were in the area of the business “for a planned protest.”

Former Plum Lake town hall used in firefighting training exercise

In May of 2023, Nicolet College hosted one of the 3/4 scale, traveling versions of the Vietnam Veterans Memorial. Casey Lehmann, an eight year veteran of service in the Wisconsin Army National Guard (WIARNG) that included a 2003-04 deployment to Iraq with the WIARNG’s 724th Engineer Battalion , is the college’s finance manager and coordinated the 2023 visit that resulted in the college receiving one of its panels.

Chicago man found guilty in 2024 Woodruff armed robbery
A Chicago man will be sentenced next month for his role in an armed robbery in the area of Thies Road and Lorann Drive in Woodruff in mid-January, 2024. As part of a plea agreement, Oscar Resendiz, 34, was found guilty in Oneida County court by Oneida County judge Mary Sowinski on April 28 of armed robbery and battery.
Bear aware: Winter Park’s ‘Wild Side’ series begins for 2026
Fifty-one people took some time out of their Saturday to hear a presentation about black bears. Winter Park board member Wendy Kraly said the 90-minute presentation, made by Randy Johnson, who has been a large carnivore specialist with the Wisconsin Department of Natural Resources (DNR) since 2020, was part of the facility’s “Walk On The Wild Side” series, which began in June 2025 as part of a new educational outreach program.

Arbor Vitae has state grant approved to help rebuild ‘beat-up’ Witches Lake Road
The town of Arbor Vitae has been selected as a recipient of funding for work on one of its town roads through the Wisconsin Department of Transportation (DOT). The town received a confirmation letter to that effect on April 14 from Kristina Boardman, Wisconsin’s DOT secretary, who notified the town a project to improve a portion of Witches Lake Road had been selected.

Vilas County supervisor Jerry Burkett will once again serve as board chair. That was one of the results of the county board’s post-April election reorganization during its April 21 meeting. Burkett was nominated by county supervisor Dan Swiecichowski which received a second, one of them from county supervisor Holly Tomalnovich.
