Having won two straight, the Northland Pines girls’ hockey co-op had a tough task with a Wisconsin Valley Conference road contest. The Eagles beat Coulee Region 3-2 on Saturday in Eagle River. Then, the Northland Pines co-op fell 4-2 at Wisconsin Valley Union on Monday.
Tiger boys’ basketball team falls to Hurley
The Mercer boys’ basketball team found itself in a similar position with another tough conference test on Tuesday. Hurley defeated the Tigers 80-20 in a Northern Lights Conference game in Hurley.
Lakeland gymnastics scores season-high 114.85
Competing for the first time in over three weeks, the Lakeland gymnastics team ended up with a season-high score and several personal records (PRs). The Thunderbirds finished seventh out of nine teams with a score of 114.85 at the Julie Langseth Invite in Antigo on Saturday.

The Eagles, made up of skaters from Northland Pines, Rhinelander, Lakeland, Antigo, Three Lakes, Hurley and Norway (Mich.) high schools, beat Medford 7-3 on Friday in Medford. Then, the Northland Pines co-op defeated Coulee Region 3-2 on Saturday in Eagle River.

The Lakeland girls’ basketball team had a tough test when it traveled to Medford for a Great Northern Conference game. Medford (11-5, 8-1 GNC) defeated the Thunderbirds 72-31 on Friday night at Raider Hall. Kayla Baumgartner, Rylee Hraby and Taylor Klingbeil combined for 57 points for the Raiders.

The Thunderbird boys’ hockey team wrapped up the non-conference portion of the regular season with a 5-1 road loss to Ashland on Thursday. “It was a good game against a very good Ashland team,” coach Jake Suter said. “I’m proud of the kids’ effort and no-quit mentality. The Drummond High School boys’ basketball team showed whey they are one of the top teams in the Northern Lights Conference with a big win over the Mercer Tigers. Drummond defeated Mercer 63-27 on Friday night in Mercer.

The top team in the Great Northern Conference made its presence known against the Lakeland girls’ basketball team on Tuesday. Mosinee defeated the Thunderbirds 64-32 in Minocqua. Mosinee improved to a conference-best 9-0.
Bluejays best Lakeland boys’ wrestling team
The Lakeland boys’ wrestling team competed against a familiar school in an unfamiliar fashion on Tuesday. Merrill defeated the Thunderbirds 53-27 in a Great Northern Conference dual, the first since the Bluejays joined the GNC this fall. The dual meet took place on the stage of an auditorium, a change that took place after the meet got rescheduled.

The losing streak is over. The Mercer High School boys’ basketball team went on the road and won its first game of the season. First, Lac Courte Oreilles defeated the Tigers 63-39 on Monday in Hayward. Then, Mercer beat Butternut 55-31 on Tuesday to split a pair of Northern Lights Conference games.

The Lakeland Union High School boys’ swim team put a bow on the dual season with two competitions in two days. The Thunderbirds traveled to Medford on Monday for a double dual with Tomahawk. The Raiders beat the Thunderbirds 66-20. The Hatchets defeated Lakeland 81-20. On Tuesday, Shawano/Seymour won 99-15 over Lakeland.

Ava Evenhouse has gained many accolades throughout the course of her prep career. She added to her résumé by becoming the latest Thunderbird to reach 1,000 career points. Evenhouse reached the 1,000-point mark early in the second half of Lakeland’s 65-32 non-conference loss to Pacelli on Tuesday in front of the Lakeland faithful.

The Lakeland boys’ wrestling team put together one of its best performances of the season on Saturday. The Thunderbirds finished fourth out of seven teams with 182.5 points at the Oredocker Northland Invite in Ashland. Eight of Lakeland’s 11 wrestlers placed on the podium, third place or higher, in their respective weight classes with one champion.

History was made when the Lakeland Union High School girls’ wrestling team hosted its first-ever meet at the LUHS fieldhouse on Monday. First, the Thunderbirds finished eighth with 66.5 points at the Bluejay Challenge in Merrill on Saturday. Then, Lakeland took second out of six teams with 144.5 points in a Great Northern Conference/Wisconsin Valley Conference Challenge Night on Monday.

The Lady Thunderbird basketball squad came up with its biggest win of the season last Friday in a road Great Northern Conference victory. Lakeland defeated Tomahawk 55-45 on Friday, Jan. 9 in Tomahawk. Then, Rhinelander snapped its losing streak against the Thunderbirds, winning 53-29 in Minocqua on Tuesday.

Lakeland Nordic ski boys, Brayden Kelly finish runner-up
A smaller Lakeland Nordic ski team tested its speed with a competition in Iola on Sunday. The Lakeland boys finished second out of seven qualified teams with 15 points at the Iola Freestyle Invite. Iola Winter Sports Club won with 14 points. The Lakeland girls didn’t have enough skiers to qualify as a team.

Thunderbirds rebound from overtime loss, shut out Medford
The Lakeland boys’ hockey team earned its first Great Northern Conference victory of the season early this week after an overtime heartbreaker to Antigo. The Thunderbirds fell 2-1 to Antigo on Saturday at the Lakeland Hawks Ice Arena. Lakeland rebounded with a 5-0 shutout over Medford on Monday, also at the LHIA.

Thunderbird boys’ swim achieves personal records
Lakeland’s Silas Fetrow and Garrison Jacques looked to continue to get faster and gain more experience in the pool with a meet in Ashwaubenon last weekend. “The Ashwaubenon Invite was a great experience as we were able to swim against teams from across the state,” Jacques said. “This meet gives us the opportunity to see some of our competitors as we prepare for conference and sectionals.”
Two Thunderbird boys’ wrestlers find the podium in Merrill
The Lakeland boys’ wrestling team got back to wrestling in tournaments with the Bluejay Challenge on Saturday. The Thunderbirds placed 20th with 40 points in Merrill with two Thunderbirds reaching the podium, top six.
Mercer boys’ basketball team drops game to Mellen
Playing its first game in three weeks, the Mercer boys’ basketball team fell 78-20 to Mellen on the road in a Northern Lights Conference game. “It was tough,” coach Anthony Pemble said. “It took us until the second half to get anything going.”
