The Lakeland boys’ hockey team won its third Great Northern Conference game of the season following a road victory against Medford. The Thunderbirds shut out the Raiders 3-0 on Tuesday.
In a change from years past, the Lakeland Nordic ski team hosted the Northern Conference meet for the first time in over 15 years on Tuesday. A short-handed Lakeland team had mixed results.
The Lakeland boys’ basketball team split a pair of non-conference games earlier this week. The Thunderbirds fell 66-49 to Wisconsin Rapids on the road on Monday. Then, Lakeland responded with a 67-44 victory over Crandon in Minocqua on Tuesday.
The top team in the Great Northern Conference made its presence known against the Lakeland girls’ basketball team on Tuesday.
Mosinee defeated the Thunderbirds 64-32 in Minocqua. Mosinee improved to a conference-best 9-0.
The Lakeland boys’ wrestling team competed against a familiar school in an unfamiliar fashion on Tuesday. Merrill defeated the Thunderbirds 53-27 in a Great Northern Conference dual, the first since the Bluejays joined the GNC this fall. The dual meet took place on the stage of an auditorium, a change that took place after the meet got rescheduled.
The losing streak is over. The Mercer High School boys’ basketball team went on the road and won its first game of the season.
First, Lac Courte Oreilles defeated the Tigers 63-39 on Monday in Hayward. Then, Mercer beat Butternut 55-31 on Tuesday to split a pair of Northern Lights Conference games.
The Lakeland Union High School boys’ swim team put a bow on the dual season with two competitions in two days. The Thunderbirds traveled to Medford on Monday for a double dual with Tomahawk. The Raiders beat the Thunderbirds 66-20. The Hatchets defeated Lakeland 81-20. On Tuesday, Shawano/Seymour won 99-15 over Lakeland.
Goals were hard to come by for the T-Bird boys’ hockey team as they dropped two Great Northern Conference games in successive nights. Lakeland fell 3-1 to Mosinee on Monday, Jan. 19. Then, Antigo shut out the Thunderbirds 1-0 on Tuesday, Jan. 20.
The Lakeland Union High School bowling team has shown improvement from last season to this year as they look to finish the campaign strong. The Thunderbirds were 4-4 in the Division 2 standings as of Saturday. That put them tied for fifth with Rhinelander out of 10 teams.
The Lakeland boys’ wrestling team overcame cold temperatures and traveled to Wausau on Saturday to get one more varsity non-conference tournament in. The Thunderbirds finished sixth out of 19 teams with 94 points at the Lumberjack Invite at Wausau East High School.
