A clutch shot by one of the top teams in the Wisconsin Valley Conference dashed any hopes of a Lakeland girls’ basketball upset last week. The Thunderbirds fell 46-42 to non-conference Wisconsin Rapids on Tuesday, Dec. 30 in Wisconsin Rapids. Leondra Denson (13 points) hit the go-ahead and game-winning 3-pointer with less than 30 seconds left in the game.
The Northland Pines girls’ hockey co-op split a pair of games over the weekend, the second of which took place in Minocqua. First, the Eagles fell 3-1 to Badger Lightning on Friday in Eagle River. Then, Northland Pines defeated Viroqua 4-1 on Saturday at the Lakeland Hawks Ice Arena.
Christmas Day may be in the past, but the fun doesn’t have to stop. There is plenty of fun winter activities to take in over the holiday break. The 20th anniversary of the Disney Channel Original Movie “High School Musical” is coming up in a couple of weeks. It’s a movie that I grew up with, and one that I can relate to. People might disagree with me, but I consider the original “High School Musical” from 2006 a sports movie. It’s a musical, but a lot of the movie surrounds around the game of basketball. One of the main plot points involves the East High Wildcats playing in a championship-level basketball game.
One of the top prep girls’ basketball players in the state of Wisconsin almost single-handedly outscored the Lakeland girls’ basketball team by herself on Monday, Dec. 22. Rice Lake, ranked No. 3 in Division 2 in the latest Bound Wisconsin/Zaleski Sports girls’ basketball media poll, defeated the Thunderbirds 82-40 in a non-conference game in Rice Lake.
One might have seen Brian Maki walking around the court, field or hallways of Lakeland Union High School as a teacher and/or coach. He’s now a Hall of Famer. Maki was inducted into the Wisconsin Basketball Coaches Hall of Fame as an assistant coach in September. He was one of 30 inductees in the 2025 class.
After losing by over 30 points earlier in the week, the Lakeland boys’ basketball team won by over 30 points to achieve its first Great Northern Conference win of the season. The Thunderbirds (2-3, 1-2 GNC) beat Antigo 76-36 on Friday, Dec. 19 in Minocqua.
