Lakeland track and field came back to Minocqua with the inaugural Oneida Country Triangular trophy following Tuesday’s meet. The Oneida County Triangular featured three schools — Lakeland, Rhinelander and Three Lakes. The Thunderbirds had the most combined points between the boys’ and girls’ teams.
Lakeland girls’ soccer scored a season-high nine goals in a 9-1 Great Northern Conference road win over Antigo Tuesday. The Thunderbirds (7-0-0, 5-0-0-0 GNC) got goals from five different players. The game ended in the 65th minute due to the mercy rule with Lakeland up by eight goals.
The Lakeland Union High School boys’ tennis team got to face a variety of competition with five non-conference matches and one conference clash. The Thunderbirds went 0-5 in five matches at the De Pere Invite Friday, April 24 through Saturday, April 25. Lakeland then fell 3-4 to Rhinelander in a Great Northern Conference match Tuesday in the home opener in Minocqua.
The Lakeland softball team took on one of the top teams in Division 2 Tuesday. Mosinee, ranked No. 2 in Division 2 according to the Wisconsin Fastpitch Softball Coaches Association/MaxPreps coaches poll, shut out the Thunderbirds 10-0 in a Great Northern Conference game at JoAnn Scott Memorial Field in Mosinee.
Lakeland baseball remained winless following a 15-3 five-inning loss to Mosinee Tuesday. Errors piled up again for the Thunderbirds, committing at least six in the game.
Early-season results have shown that the Lakeland golf team’s quest for an eighth straight Great Northern Conference title won’t be easy. The Thunderbirds took part in the first leg of the GNC tournament Friday at Merrill Golf Club. Lakeland finished third out of eight teams with a score of 320. Mosinee placed first with a 318 followed by Rhinelander at 319.
The Lakeland track and field team gave a variety of athletes a chance to show what they could do in a meet at Medford Thursday. “The Medford meet was meant to be more to allow JV-level kids a chance to race in their events or have kids try new events,” coach Gordy Hartzheim said. “I think it went really well. We got to see some new people in new events.”
Lakeland softball used a couple of home runs, and one big inning, to power its way past a rival. The Thunderbirds beat Rhinelander 10-5 in a Great Northern Conference game. The win was Lakeland’s first true road victory and got them back to .500 on the season.
The Lakeland Union High School girls’ soccer team did just enough to win a weather-shortened game over Merrill by the score of 1-0 Thursday night in Minocqua. The Thunderbirds led 1-0 when lightning flashed in the distance at the 43 minute, 59 second mark of the game. The game was stopped for a 30-minute delay before the game was ultimately called.
