For a second straight year, the Lakeland boys’ soccer team called themselves Great Northern Conference champions.
The Thunderbirds defeated Merrill 4-0 on Tuesday in Minocqua.
The Lakeland volleyball team may not have gotten all the results they wanted to at last weekend’s conference tournament, but they still made a little program history. The Thunderbirds went 2-1 and finished in third place at the inaugural Great Northern Conference tournament on Saturday in Eagle River. Lakeland beat Antigo in three sets, fell to Medford in four sets and beat Merrill in four sets.
Homecoming. Senior Night. One of the co-leaders of the Great Northern Conference is making the trip to Minocqua in a football game packed with emotion. The Thunderbirds (5-3, 3-3 GNC) are hosting Tomahawk (7-1, 5-1 GNC) tonight at IncredibleBank Field for the Homecoming game.
Turnovers and missed chances led to a Lakeland football loss in a Saturday afternoon contest. Wausau East (3-5, 2-4 GNC) defeated the Thunderbirds (5-3, 3-3 GNC) 24-10 in a Great Northern Conference game at Thom Field in Wausau. The loss ended any hopes Lakeland had at sharing the GNC title.
One of the goals for the Lakeland boys’ soccer team is a conference championship. They earned at least a share of it following their latest win. The Thunderbirds beat Medford 8-0 in 79 minutes on the road on Thursday.
It was a tale of two days for the Lakeland Union High School volleyball team as the T-Birds got swept against a top Division 5 team before ultimately taking third place at the inaugural Great Northern Conference tournament on Saturday.
Before the season ended, one Thunderbird from Lakeland’s girls’ tennis team got to play against some top competition. Lakeland’s Sierra Wallace took part in a WIAA Division 2 sectional meet at the John & Fay Menard YMCA Tennis Center in Eau Claire on Thursday. Wallace fell to Amery’s Faith Halverson, the top seed on the other side of the No. 1 singles draw, 6-1, 6-0.
Down a couple of key runners, the Lakeland cross country team still put forth solid individual and team performances on Saturday. The Lakeland boys finished second out of nine qualifying teams with 56 points at the Hatchet Invite at Tomahawk High School. Lakeland’s Emerson Rubo and Addison Eggen both finished in the top five of the girls’ race once again.
The theme of the day was experience. The Lakeland girls’ tennis team got plenty of it with one Thunderbird advancing to the next round. The Thunderbirds finished fifth out of eight teams in a WIAA Division 2 subsectional meet Tuesday, Oct. 7 at the John & Fay Menard YMCA Tennis Center in Eau Claire. Lakeland’s Sierra Wallace won her No. 1 singles match that moved her on to yesterday’s sectional meet.
All three phases came together to help the Thunderbird football team snap its brief two-game losing streak last week.
