The Citizens Academy conducted by the Vilas County Sheriff’s Office starts March 22 and goes through May 5.

Hazelhurst board to proceed with sale of town property

The town of Hazelhurst, after a Feb. 24 public hearing, voted to proceed with the sale of a 1.7-acre property near the intersection of Mill Road and Sylvan Shore Drive. The land is part of the former town dump property, but was never itself used as a landfill.

MHLT makes auxiliary agreement with virtual charter school

The Minocqua-Hazelhurst-Lake Tomahawk school board, on Feb. 23, voted to enter a one-year auxiliary agreement with the Rural Virtual Academy (RVA) charter school for the 2022-2023 school year, with a possibility of the district becoming a full partner with RVA in future years.

Meeting of the electors to be scheduled ‘ASAP’ in Newbold

At a special meeting of the Newbold town board on Feb. 17, plans for the construction of a new town hall were discussed. Devin Flanigan, construction manager with Appleton-based Keller Inc., presented plans for a new structure, which would feature a much larger meeting space.

Camp Manito-wish introduces COVID vaccine mandate

For the summer of 2022, Camp Manito-wish YMCA in Boulder Junction is requiring full vaccination against COVID-19 for all campers and staff. This means that participants will need to complete a primary vaccination series, with or without a booster.

Defense attorney’s errors result in new trial for former custodian

A former elementary school custodian accused of luring a child into a closet and touching her inappropriately has been granted a new trial after an Oneida County judge found a series of mistakes made by his defense attorney had rendered his original trial fundamentally unfair.

Oneida County public works department approves two bids for road work

The Oneida County public works committee Thursday approved two construction bids for County Highways D and Z. 

Vehicle fuel prices in Oneida and Vilas counties among most expensive in Wisconsin

$3.59 was the price of a gallon of regular gas at the Minocqua Kwik Trip as of the morning of Thursday, Feb. 24. Kwik Trip’s price was the highest, with the majority of area gas stations sitting at $3.49. 

Woodruff man held on $100K in child abuse case

A 36-year-old Woodruff man accused of physically abusing his infant son is being held in the Oneida County jail on a $100,000 cash bond pending a preliminary hearing scheduled for March 4.

Vilas County zoning committee approves staffing requisitions

Staffing requisitions from Vilas County zoning administrator Dawn Schmidt were approved by the county board’s zoning and planning committee at its meeting last week.

Rhinelander Lions Fisheree gets anglers on the ice

The Rhinelander Lions Club held its annual Fisheree on February 12, 2022. There were several categories in which adults could bring in fish to measure. Top winners received cash prizes. In the northern pike category, Ed Saal won with his 31-inch fish.

Beginning beekeeper class

The Oneida County Beekeeper Association in Rhinelander is hosting beginner beekeeper classes with the opportunity to choose between two different dates, Feb. 26 or March 12.

Former sheriff’s deputy pleads not guilty to stalking, other charges

Former Oneida County sheriff’s deputy Stetson Grant has entered not guilty pleas to stalking, misconduct in public office/act inconsistent with the duties of office, false imprisonment and other charges filed in Oneida County Circuit Court earlier this year.

Three Lakes man sentenced to prison for possession of child porn, illicit filming of patient

A 32-year-old Three Lakes man was sentenced last week to a total of four years in prison, to be followed by three years extended supervision, for possession of child pornography and capturing a representation of nudity without consent.

One dead in Vilas County snowmobile accident

The operator of a snowmobile died as the result of injuries sustained Sunday afternoon in a snowmobile accident in the town of Washington.
