Ties That Bind Us Donation expands access to mammograms at Aspirus Tomahawk Hospital

Aspirus Tomahawk Hospital has received a generous $10,000 donation from Ties That Bind Us of Tomahawk to support mammogram screenings for individuals who are underinsured or uninsured. The contribution will help remove financial barriers and ensure more women in the community have access to early breast cancer detection.

Ties That Bind Us of Tomahawk raises funds through local community efforts, including events such as a golf outing, as well as contributions from area organizations. The group is dedicated to supporting local cancer patients by addressing informational, emotional, and financial needs, reinforcing the belief that no one should walk their journey to survivorship alone.

“Mammograms are one of the most important tools we have for early detection of breast cancer, and this donation helps ensure more women can access that care,” said Courtney Oberg, RT, Aspirus Tomahawk Hospital.

Aspirus Tomahawk Hospital continues to enhance its screening capabilities with advanced technology, including 3D mammography with Genius AI. Clinical studies show that 3D mammography can find 41 percent more invasive cancers, reduce unnecessary callbacks by up to 40 percent, and detect cancers up to 15 months earlier than conventional methods — providing patients with earlier answers and greater peace of mind. With 3D Mammography, Aspirus Tomahawk’s Radiology Department has seen an incredible demand — having screened more patients in 2026 than was done in all of 2025. This support makes a meaningful difference for women who might otherwise delay or forgo this potentially lifesaving screening.

Breast cancer remains one of the most common cancers affecting women. According to national data, about 1 in 8 women will develop breast cancer in their lifetime. Early detection is critical — when found early, the five-year survival rate is significantly higher.

The American Cancer Society recommends that women at average risk begin annual mammograms at age 45, with the option to start as early as 40. Women at higher risk — including those with a family history of breast cancer, certain genetic factors, or dense breast tissue — may need to begin screening earlier or receive additional imaging. Patients are encouraged to consult with their primary care provider to determine the best screening plan for their individual needs.
