Michael Kelly Murphy, 67, of North Aurora, Ill., passed away surrounded by his loved ones on February 2, 2026. Born on September 22, 1958, in Aurora, Ill., Mike was raised on the west side of Aurora, where his mischievous spirit and sense of humor were evident from an early age. He proudly attended Marmion Academy, where he made lifelong friendships and developed a strong love for the Cadets and the game of football.
Mike went on to serve as president of ZefTek, Inc., founded by his father, Dick Murphy, which developed railcar parts designed to protect cargo and prevent railcar wear and damage. Throughout his career, Mike successfully filed numerous patents, continuing a family legacy in the railroad industry that spanned three generations. He was deeply proud of the company he helped build, the team he worked alongside, and the work he did.
But nothing mattered more to Mike than his family. His wife, Mary Jane, was the great love of his life. Married for 41 years, they shared two children — Elizabeth and Michael — and built a life filled with love, laughter, kindness, and joy.
Second only to his love for his family was his love for the Green Bay Packers. He never missed a Sunday game and knew Lambeau Field like the back of his hand.
A constant in his life, Mike’s favorite place in the world was Manitowish Waters — a place deeply woven into his family’s story and some of their most treasured memories. He felt most at peace in the Northwoods, whether he was on the boat, skiing, hunting, or just sitting on the pier.
Above all else, he was a people person. He never met a stranger and made friends everywhere he went — in conference rooms, in rail yards, on the golf course, at hunting camps, and in everyday life. He had a gift for making others feel comfortable, seen, and welcome.
Mike leaves behind a legacy of love, kindness, and generosity, and will be so greatly missed by all who had the privilege of knowing and loving him.
Mike was preceded in death by his father, Richard Murphy, and his mother, Ann Murphy. In addition to his wife, Mary Jane, he is survived by his children, Elizabeth (David) Holtzman and Michael Murphy, Jr.; his grandson, Bennett Murphy Holtzman; his step-mother, Marie Murphy; and his siblings, Carrie (Patrick) Feehan, Bob (Wendy) Murphy, Meg (Mark) Lincoln, and Jane (Don) Devine, along with several nieces and nephews.
Services will be held on Saturday, Feb. 14, at Blessed Sacrament Church in North Aurora, Ill. Visitation will be held from 9 to 11 a.m., followed by a funeral Mass at 11 a.m.
In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to the Alzheimer’s Foundation.
