Monique “Nikki” Smitala passed away peacefully on October 19, 2025, surrounded by love, leaving a legacy of service, wisdom, and kindness.
Born in St. Paul, Minn., the eldest of nine children, Nikki’s life was defined by compassion and devotion to others. At 15, she entered the convent of the Missionary Sisters Servants of the Holy Spirit. She later earned degrees in nursing and social work in Chicago and Washington. At St. Therese Hospital in Waukegan, Ill., she served as pediatric charge nurse and founded one of the county’s first hospital social-work departments, helping establish its first inpatient psychiatric unit.
In 1968, Nikki left the convent and married Kenneth Smitala, a widower with seven children. Together they raised eight, creating a home filled with warmth, laughter, and faith.
Her deep spirituality guided her every day. A devoted Catholic open to all faiths, she practiced gratitude and mindful living. “I believe there is a loving God waiting to welcome us,” she wrote.
Nikki was happiest surrounded by family and friends — hosting gatherings, celebrating milestones, and cherishing her time at the family cabin on Bass Lake, where generations shared laughter and love.
Preceded in death by her husband, Kenneth, she is survived by sons Todd (Claudio, Agnaldo), Thomas, Paul (Lori), Kenny (Margaret), Stephen (Donna); daughters Julie (Mike Jadrich), Christine, and Cynthia (Richard Higley); 16 grandchildren; 26 great-grandchildren; and many dear relatives and friends.
The family extends heartfelt thanks to her niece Katy for her devoted care and companionship.
A small memorial service will be held per Nikki’s wishes. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to a charity supporting nursing, social work, or spiritual growth.
