Joyce Helena Kern (née Matzen), 96, passed away peacefully on April 22, 2025 in Menasha. She lived the last few months at home in the care of her granddaughter, Becky.
Born on December 21, 1928 in Milwaukee, Joyce was the daughter of May and Herb Matzen. She graduated from Bay View High School in 1946. It was at this time that she met John Kern, the love of her life. Joyce attended the University of Wisconsin-Madison. She and John were married in 1948, and raised their family in south Milwaukee.
Throughout their lives, Joyce and John shared a passion for travel. They explored destinations across the United States and abroad. After retirement, they spent their winters in Estero, Fla., and their summers surrounded by family on Trout Lake in Boulder Junction — a place that held a special spot in Joyce’s heart. Joyce was also an avid knitter — she was rarely without a knitting project.
Family was central to Joyce’s life. She is lovingly remembered by her daughter Kathy (Hal) and her son Tom (Susanne); her adult grandchildren Dave, Sara, Sam, Becky, and Sean who brought her great joy; as well as nine great-grandchildren. She also leaves behind many nieces and nephews who were dear to her.
Joyce was preceded in death by her parents; her sister, Carol; and her devoted husband of nearly 68 years, John Kern, who passed away in 2016.
Joyce’s legacy of love for family and adventure will live on through all who knew her. May her memory bring comfort and inspiration to those whose lives she touched. The family has opted to forego a memorial service. In Joyce’s memory, donations may be made to the Boulder Junction Library, PO Box 9, Boulder Junction WI 54512.
