Joyce Evelyn Gabriella Hendrickson Kivi “Suomaalainen Centenarian,” 100, of Minocqua, was called to her rest on Saturday, July 5, 2025 at Careview Health and Rehab in Minocqua.
Joyce was born on July 3, 1925 to Bill and Anna Hendrickson in Brantwood. She was a graduate of Tri-County High School and attended the last Tripoli school class reunion in 2023 at 99 years old. Joyce attended Shasta Junior College Nursing Program. She worked as a telephone switchboard operator for Ma Bell for many years.
Joyce was introduced to her future husband, George M. Kivi, by friends at an Iggy Koskkila Finnish Accordion music dance who then proposed to her on February 12, 1947. Joyce and George were married in Ironwood, Mich. on July 12, 1947 and lived on the family dairy farm, raising a family of four in the Erwin Township until 1959.
Joyce enjoyed singing, dancing, caring for her family and pets, reading, listening to music (especially polka), crosswords and watching wildlife on Pine Lake (which they relocated back to in 1987). She also traveled the world extensively with destinations including Finland, Italy, China, Israel and Germany. Joyce was a member of WELS churches in Wisconsin as well as Northern and Southern California.
Reaching the age of 100, Joyce is preceded in death by many family and friends that she loved dearly. She is survived by her children, Evelyn Marie Kivi Baughman (Robert), George Melvin Kivi, Jr., Debi Kivi-Tupper (Bob), Brian John Kivi (Sondra); six grandchildren; and 11 great-grandchildren.
A Visitation will be held on Thursday, July 24, at Trinity Lutheran Church in Minocqua, from 10 to 11 a.m. followed by a memorial service at 11 a.m. and food and fellowship to follow. The memorial service will be live-streamed by the church.
