Elmer C. Eichstaedt, 89, of Shawano, passed away peacefully on Friday morning, June 27, 2025, at Shawano Place Assisted Living.
Elmer was born November 27, 1935, in Waukesha, a son of the late Elmer W. and Anita (Wolf) Eichstaedt. After graduating from Waukesha High School in 1951, Elmer served honorably in the military, stationed at various locations. Upon returning home from his military service Elmer enrolled at the University of Wisconsin-Oshkosh and earned his B.S. in junior high education. He later went on to earn his master’s degree from Valparaiso University.
On August 12, 1961, Elmer married the former Sandra Stokes at the Evangelical and Reformed Church in Waukesha. The couple began their life together in Merrill, where they lived for two years. They later resided in Menomonee Falls and Shawano, spending seven years in Shawano before moving to Arbor Vitae, where they called home for nearly thirty years. In 2007, Elmer and Sandra returned to Shawano. His wife Sandra preceded him in death on January 4, 2014.
Elmer dedicated his career to education, teaching in various settings including public schools, Indian reservations and correctional facilities. Though he could be perceived as “rough”, he cared deeply about his students and had a strong commitment to making a difference in the lives of others and in the communities he served. He cherished the outdoors, enjoying hunting, fishing, and sometimes just sitting outside and doing nothing. Elmer was an avid Packer, Brewer, and Badger fan. He also took great pride in coaching his sons’ sports teams. Elmer treasured the many trips he and Sandy took together — whether spontaneous road trips or journeys abroad, he relished the adventure and time shared.
In retirement, Elmer and Sandra divided their time between Arbor Vitae and Green Valley, Ariz., before eventually settling back in Shawano.
Elmer is survived by his three children, Timothy (Noreen) Eichstaedt of Stockbridge, Thomas Eichstaedt (Significant Other, Christy) of Lake Tomahawk, and Katherine (Douglas) Veine of Benton Harbor, Mich.; a proud grandfather to his six grandchildren, Taylor, Megan, and Noah Eichstaedt, Haley Tornabe, and Brady and Evan Veine; his great-grandchild, Henry Eichstaedt; brother, Marvin Eichstaedt; and sister, Sally Schoeneman. Elmer is further survived by several nephews, nieces, other relatives, and many friends.
Elmer will be remembered not only for his dedication to education, his love for the outdoors, and the quiet moments, but also for the enduring impact he had on the lives of those around him. After all these years, Elmer is reunited with Sandy, and they can start their adventures all over again!
A funeral service for Elmer C. Eichstaedt will be held on Monday, June 30, at 11 a.m. at Mickelson Funeral Service in Shawano. Deacon James Lonick will officiate. Interment will take place at Woodlawn Cemetery in Shawano. Visitation will begin at the funeral home on Monday at 9:30 a.m. and continue until the time of service.
In lieu of flowers and plants, the family prefers memorials in Elmer’s name.
