Richard “Dick” Norman Schowalter passed away peacefully on Sunday, November 17, 2024 at the age of 83 years old.

He was born on October 14, 1941 to Norman Schowalter and Genevieve “Jean” McGuire (Schowalter) in Milwaukee. He attended school in Elkhorn, where he enjoyed his time playing basketball and baseball.

After high school, he moved to Grandview; where he worked many years of construction and factory work. It was during this time that he met the love of his life, Theodora “Teddie” Bernhoft. Richard and Teddie married in 1961 and were blessed with three beautiful children. They enjoyed fishing, camping and hunting in their time together. Teddie would later pass, leaving behind her adored family.

Richard then moved to Mercer, where he started a business and grew his family with Diane Winter. They were blessed with nine loving children and would continue to share their love of nature with them. Diane unexpectedly passed away in 2002, leaving Richard to care for their beautiful family.

Richard would spend several years after watching his children grow and enjoyed being a part of all their greatest life accomplishments. Richard was blessed with 19 grandchildren that were the light of his life.

Richard was an avid sports fan and rooted for all the Wisconsin teams; he especially enjoyed the Green Bay Packers and Milwaukee Bucks. Richard spent many of his retired years outdoors, enjoying gardening, landscaping and putting up large holiday displays.

He was known by everyone for his witty sense of humor and could spark up a laugh in any room he was in. He was very caring to all who knew him and truly wore his heart on his sleeve. Richard will be deeply missed by all who knew and loved him.

Richard is survived by his children, Rich Schowalter, Robin (John) Seal, Stacey (Chad) Lompre, Ashley Schowalter (Scott Kraus), Courtney Schowalter, Ryan (Kaitlyn) Schowalter, Dustin Schowalter (Hallie Kalmakoff), Amy Siolka, Aaron (Kayla) Schowalter, Brittni Schowalter (Steven Provost) and Michele (Delos) Kohnhorst; grandchildren, Brooke, Evan, Alexis S., Alexis L., Ashleigh, Dominique, Hayleigh, Ryley, Ryler, Zyker, Bryer, Brayden, Aubree, Olivia, Hannah, Kameron, Karsyn, Kailor and Hayes; many great-grandchildren and siblings, James Schowalter, Susan Lessor and Robert Schowalter.

Richard was preceded in death by his parents, Norman Schowalter and Genevieve “Jean” McGuire (Schowalter); his wife, Diane Winter, his son, Rex Schowalter and son-in-law, Cody Siolka.

The family would like to thank all of staff at The Waterford Assisted Living of Colby for taking great care of our father over the last three years.

A memorial gathering will be held from noon until 3 p.m. on Wednesday, Nov. 27, at Bolger Funeral Home – Woodruff Chapel.
