Shirley Alice Harris

Shirley Alice Harris, 96, of Minocqua, and formerly of Beloit, passed away on Wednesday, June 19, 2024 at Country Terrace in Minocqua. She was born on December 9, 1927, in Janesville, the daughter of Glenn and Ina (Balis) Nyman. Shirley was an Orfordville High School graduate. She married Rodney Harris on May 23, 1945 in Footville. He predeceased her on February 16, 1983. Shirley worked at several local beauty salons before becoming the owner and operator of Shirley Harris Beauty Shop in Beloit until 1969. The family then moved to rural Orfordville where she cared for her mother-in-law until her passing and her beloved granddaughter. While living in the country Shirley enjoyed creating and building her rock garden. Her husband Rodney often joked “she is building a by-pass for I-90.” While residing at Country Terrace, Shirley enjoyed helping with planting flowers in the outdoor flower boxes, playing bingo, and creating holiday crafts. Shirley loved to sing. Shirley was a former member of Central Christian Church, Beloit, Footville Church of Christ, and Roxbury Road Church of Christ in Janesville. She was a member of Faith Evangelical Free Church of Woodruff. Survivors include her son, Kenneth (Marilyn) Harris of Beloit; daughter, Sheryl (Ted) Ashby of Sayner; grandchildren, Heather (Jim) Higgins, Andrew (Melinda) Ashby, and James (Claire Jordan) Harris; brother, Richard Nyman of Footville; great-grandchildren E.J., Harry and Teddy Higgins; Ezra, Zalayha, Noella, Precyse and Silas Ashby; nieces, nephews, and cousins. Shirley was predeceased by her parents; husband, Rodney; infant son, James Harris, mother-in-law Lucille Kallas, and sister-in-law Darlene Nyman. A memorial service for Shirley will be held at 11 a.m. on Saturday, September 7, in the Footville Church of Christ, Footville. Inurnment will be held in East Lawn Cemetery.
