On April 9, 2024, Jeanne Brown passed away at home peacefully, surrounded by her family. Born on May 18, 1930, she was one of ten siblings, daughter of Paul and Marie Poupart. On the cusp of age 94, she was the oldest Lac du Flambeau tribal member.
Jeanne’s legacy can be marked by how she touched the lives and hearts of people she met throughout her life with her generosity, wisdom, playful humor, and kindness. To her, every moment was a teaching opportunity that was always laced with a touch of her unique sense of life’s perspective.
Jeanne was an exemplary role model and embodied the true meaning of quiet strength, courage, and leadership. She was a loving caregiver, homemaker, gardener, and enjoyed watching the birds, feeding the chipmunks, and most of all loved being entertained by the many family dogs. She was also an excellent seamstress, hostess, nurse, painter, comedian, dancer, cook, carpenter, and all-around jack of all trades. She acquired her love of fishing from her dad and of the Packers, whose games she never missed. Her energy was a constant source of inspiration; if there was something to be done, she would figure out a way to get it done. She personified the meaning of toughness while facing many challenges and barriers throughout her 93 years.
Jeanne is preceded in death by her husband, Leonard “Buddy” Brown and survived by their five children, Carol Brown, Jim (Laurie) Brown, Patty (Dewey) Schwalenberg, Joni (Ric) Mathews, and Lenelle (Tom) Hrabik. She is blessed with 12 grandchildren and 14 great-grandchildren, and many nieces and nephews.
Services were held at St. Anthony’s Catholic Church in Lac du Flambeau, officiated by Father Maria Joseph Kodiganti. Donations can be made in her memory to the Oneida County Humane Society.
