Alden “Al” Bauman
He was born on December 15, 1935, in Edgar, to Martin and Esther Bauman. He graduated from UW-Madison in 1957 and started teaching in Lac du Flambeau as a PE teacher. In October 1959, he married Beverly Graveen, with whom he spent 63 years of marriage. He went on to earn his Masters Degree in Administration from UW-Superior in 1969. Al then became the administrator at Lac du Flambeau Public School until he retired in 1990. For a short while after retiring, he did some substitute teaching in Park Falls. He then started driving a school bus for the Lakeland Bus Company and after 25 years of driving the bus, he retired from the bus company. Al also ran a lawn care and snowplowing business, known as Bauman Enterprises, for many years ending both of those in 2018. One of his enjoyments was going to his cabin in Webster, which he was part owner with Doug and Dick Plath, and going to meat raffles. He also enjoyed going to Canada fishing with his son, Jeff, every summer in July. In his younger years, he spent many years going to Fort Collins, Colo., trout fishing with his very good friend Al “Snuffy” Oestreich and family who lived in Ft. Collins.
Al managed the Lac du Flambeau Indian Bowl during the early 70s for the Lac du Flambeau Tribe. He also served in the United States Army, as well as the Wisconsin National Guard in Tomahawk for seven years. Al was a member of the Lac du Flambeau Lions and a volunteer for the Lac du Flambeau ambulance in the early 70s and 80s. Al served on many Vilas County boards such as: Vilas County Board from April 1994 to Jan. 2021; Indian Affairs Committee for three years; Tribal Concerns Committee for 19 years, which he was chairperson for 18 of those years; Social Service Board for 27 years, serving chair for 15 of those years; Options Program Committee for 21 years, serving chair for 19 of those years; Library Committee representing Lac du Flambeau for 12 years; Public Health Board for 27 years; Highway Committee for 13 years; Executive Legislative Committee for one year; Law Enforcement Committee and Emergency Management for five years and Tri-County and Tribal Controlled Substance Committee for three years.
He is survived by his wife, Beverly; three children, Bruce (Tiffany) Bauman, Brenda Saglin, and Jeffery (Cindy) Bauman; 14 grandchildren, and many great-grandchildren. He is further survived by his brother, Martin (Fran) Bauman and many nieces, nephews, other relatives, and friends.
A visitation was held from 5 until 7 p.m. at the Bolger Funeral Home in Woodruff on Tuesday, Sept. 20, and on Wednesday at 10 a.m. at Calvary Lutheran Church in Minocqua followed by a funeral service at 11 a.m. A burial with military honors was at Memorial Cemetery in Lac du Flambeau.
