Aldo Zanona

Aldo Zanona of Manitowish Waters, died peacefully on August 6, 2022. He is survived by his beloved wife of 68 years Laura; his sons Alan (Kelly) and Joseph (Renee); his beloved grandchildren Kali (Mark), Melanie (Jason), Camille, and Tyler; his beloved great-grandchildren Aidan, Callum, Ceilidh, and Oliver; his dearest friends Diane, Jeanne and Frank, and Helen; and a long list of loving family members and colleagues. Aldo was truly loved by all.
He was born on October 6 1926 in Siror Italy of the Trento region, where he lived with his mother Mary, until his father Joseph was able to bring them to the USA ten years later. They settled in Chicago, surrounded by other Trentinos who had immigrated to the US. in search of the great American Dream during the heart of the depression. Aldo attended Crane Technical High School in Chicago before joining the army during World War II where he was part of the occupying force in Japan.
Utilizing the G.I. Bill, Aldo attended the University of Illinois in Champaign, where he achieved a degree in electrical engineering. This set the stage for a decades long career with Commonwealth Edison of Illinois, where Aldo designed and managed the construction of high voltage underground transmission systems, pioneered the usage of underground tunnels in Chicago’s “Loop” for the transmission of high voltage, authored multiple peer-reviewed articles, and was a leader at the IEEE, the world’s largest technical professional organization dedicated to advancing technology for the benefit of humanity. Aldo retired from Commonwealth Edison after a truly amazing career in 1989, setting the stage for Aldo and Laura to permanently relocate to Manitowish Waters, where they built their dream home and lived the good life together for the next 33 years.
Aldo loved fishing, dancing with Laura, breakfasts, dinners, and cards with friends, and helping others in any way he could, large or small. He could always be counted on to drop anything he was doing to come to the aid of a friend or stranger, advise a son, or listen to the many stories and accomplishments of his grandchildren. He was famously quick witted and possessed a unique and undeniable gift to draw people to him right up until his last days and hours. The clerk at the hardware store told us that “Aldo was the kind of a guy that made you want to come to work every day.” Above all, Aldo cherished every minute he spent with Laura and was completely dedicated to her, and to their life together. He will be forever missed and remembered by many. Hey Dad, your headphones are charged and waiting.
