Laura Zanona

Laura Zanona of Manitowish Waters, died peacefully on October 4, 2022, reuniting her with the love of her life, her beloved husband of 69 years, Aldo Zanona, who passed away earlier this year on Aug. 8. Laura is survived by her sons, Alan (Kelly) and Joseph (Renee); her beloved grandchildren, Kali (Mark); Melanie (Jason); Camille; and Tyler; her beloved great-grandchildren, Aidan; Callum; Ceilidh; and Oliver; her dearest friends, Diane; Jeanne and Frank; and Helen; and a long list of loving family members, colleagues, and caretakers. Laura was truly loved by all.
She was born on May 24, 1934 in Chicago, the daughter of Maria and Pasquale Secciani who immigrated from Italy and settled into the Ukrainian Village neighborhood of Chicago with Laura’s sisters Yolanda and Zelinda. This vibrant neighborhood was dominated by Ukrainians and Italians building new lives in the United States during the Depression, and it is here at Chicago and Western Avenues that the amazing love story of Aldo and Laura begins.
While they were eight years apart, Aldo had his sights set on Laura early on and after serving in World War II, graduating from college on the GI Bill, and returning to Chicago, he proposed. They were married in 1954 at Our Lady of Good Council Church on Western Ave. Laura’s priority was always raising and taking care of the Zanona crew on Rosedale Ave on the northwest side of Chicago. After her sons were in school, she pursued her own career as an executive secretary for Senator Walter Hoffelder and a small startup until she retired along with Aldo. They permanently relocated to Manitowish Waters, where they built their dream home and lived the good life together for the next 33 years.
Whether with her family, wayward travelers, or the community at large, Laura was truly selfless.
Once settled in the Northwoods, she dedicated herself to volunteer work within the community earning her the Presidents Volunteer Service Award in 2005 and culminating her being awarded the Lioness Club Citizen of the Year in 2006.
She loved to dance, play cards and bingo, and gather with her friends at the Rustic for Pizza or Little Bohemia for Sunday morning breakfast. She was dedicated to her children, grandchildren, and great-grandchildren and always opened her heart and home to anybody who needed one. Above all, Laura cherished every minute she spent with Aldo and was completely dedicated and devoted to him, and to their life together. She loved, was loved, and will be forever missed.
