Elgin was born in East Chicago, Ind. on April 29,1926 to Abraham and Marian Gaboian. She married Harry Sears in July 1952. In 1957, Elgin and Harry moved to their “Garden of Eden” in Presque Isle, to “homstead.” Harry died in 1999 and Elgin stayed on at the home she loved where there were leaves to rake in the fall, snow to shovel in the winter, and a garden and flowers to enjoy in the summer. Elgin loved to stay busy and her kitchen — a.k.a. her “lab” — turned out many a fine loaf of braided bread, cookies, pies or a perfected cheesecake which she loved to gift to her many neighbors and friends who would stop by. Living alone, she would often set a place for Jesus at her table.
Her spirit of independence and survival was inspiring. Her laughter will be missed.
Heartfelt thanks to all the staff and volunteers at Seasons of Life Hospice; you are all “Earth Angels.”
A memorial service will be held at a later date at Living Hope Church in Winchester. Memorial gifts can be made to Seasons of Life Hospice House in Woodruff. Bolger Funeral Home is assisting the family, www.bolgerfuneral.com for online condolences.
