Mike was born to Charles and Lillian on Feb. 5, 1939, by Doctor Kate Newcomb — the Angel on Snowshoes, in Spider Lake, now known as Manitowish Waters. He was the fourth of 10 children. The Manitowish River flowed near the family’s one-room cabin and Mike attended a one-room schoolhouse. He graduated from Hurley High School in 1957. Mike then served in the U.S. Army for two years, stationed in Germany.
When he returned home, Mike worked at Little Star Garage, which he later bought with his brother Charlie. He worked at Hansen Hardware as journeyman plumber, and later became a master plumber. He also spent time as the manager of Weber’s Cranberry Acres in Manitowish Waters. His final job was at Hilgy’s Propane until his retirement.
Mike loved the outdoors and could often be found fishing, hunting, gardening, doing yardwork and spending as much time as he was able to with his grandchildren. He was fond of animals, both domesticated and wild. He once had a raven for a pet and taught local chipmunks to eat from his hand.
Mike is survived by his siblings Charles (Hester) Rayala, Donald (Janice) Rayala, Audrey Rayala, Jerry (Dr. Paula Marquardt) Rayala, Dr. Martin Rayala, Carolyn (Bob) Kovar, Dr. Bonnie Diehl, Lisa (Phil) Schobert, and Tari (Patrick Kohlin) Rayala; children Diane Nyberg and Michael Rayala Jr.; grandchildren Jamie (Jason) Cuevas, Tarin (Peter Tenpas) Rayala, and Trent Rayala; and great-grandchildren Damien and Hayden Cuevas and by numerous nieces, nephews and other relatives and friends.
He was proceeded in death by his parents Charles and Lillian; his wife of 57 years Sharon; and Son-in-law Alan Nyberg.
A graveside service will be held at 1 p.m., Saturday, June 11 at Pine Lawn Cemetery in Manitowish Waters, with a celebration of life to follow at Little Bohemia.
