Ruth was born on Dec. 7, 1932, in Wauwatosa, to Donald and Cecilia Robertson. She was raised in Wauwatosa with her brother Bruce and her late brother Don. She graduated from Wauwatosa High School and then from Marquette University, where she received her degree in dental hygiene. After graduation, Ruth moved to Illinois to begin her career as a dental hygienist, a profession she passionately continued for 44 years. In 1957 Ruth met her late husband John D. Edelman in Minocqua, and they were married on Sept. 26, 1959. In their early years together they lived in several places, eventually settling in Lake Forest, Ill., where they lived together until John’s passing in 2014.
When Ruth was just nine years old, her father bought the beloved family cottage on the shores of Lake Minocqua. This became her home away from home and truthfully her preferred address, where she spent many of her summers enjoying all of the beauties and fun of the “north woods”. During her time in Minocqua she developed a love of swimming the shoreline, taking scenic boat rides, water skiing, bike riding, golfing and so much more. She truly loved sharing the lake home with her friends and family and she affectionately passed this love and passion onto her children and grandchildren. Ruth insisted on staying active throughout her life — enjoying activities such as snow skiing, water skiing, bike riding, ice skating, working out, hiking and golfing, a love she shared with her husband. Ruth and John actually got engaged on a golf course and she was fortunate enough to be able to continue to play this game she loved well into her 80s. In Ruth’s later years, her schedule primarily revolved around when she could get up to “The Lake” again.
In her free time Ruth was active in many associations including the local dental hygiene association, her church circle, and Catholic Charities of Lake County, enjoying Christmas shopping for many families. Come the holiday season, no one could quite work a store’s sale combined with double coupon day combined with senior discount day like Ruth.
Ruth is survived by her three children, Catherine (Stephen) Voss, John (Susan) Edelman, and Susan (John) Kobza; six grandchildren: Rebecca, Elizabeth, Gabriel, Jennifer, Jonas, & Allison; brother Bruce (Lynne) Robertson, many nieces, nephews, other beloved relatives and friends. Ruth was preceded in death by her parents, her husband John, her brother Don, several sisters-in-law and brothers-in law, and one nephew.
Visitation was at Wenban Funeral Home in Lake Forest, Ill. on Wednesday July 27, with the funeral Mass at Church of St Mary in Lake Forest on Thursday July 28. Donations in lieu of flowers can be made to Catholic Charities of Lake County.
