His dream was to own the Hilltop Resort which he was able to acquire in 1993. He left his career as a commercial appraiser for the federal government in Chicago, never to wear a suit and tie again. Tom and his wife built a resort of fun times, serenity and relaxation for generations of families and friends.
His presence of being a talented fix-it man and joyful bartender brought resort goers coming back for years. The friendships he established are countless. He loved getting to know guests or as he would call them “his friends” and said it was “neat” seeing their families grow year after year.
His hobbies included his woodworking skills and his beloved horseshoe team (dubbed “Tommy Double” for his style of play) and golf league. He enjoyed fishing, ice fishing, deer hunting and elk hunting!
Tom is survived by his wife MaryEllen McEwen of Hazelhurst and by his siblings Patricia McEwen-Kiel (Jim), Barbara McEwen (Al), Joseph McEwen (Leah) and Robert McEwen (Patty and Colleen) and further survived by many nieces, nephews and other relatives and friends.
He was preceded in death by his parents Robert and Lucille (Molly) McEwen and grandparents Joseph and Gwendolyn McEwen and Art and Dorothy Burrow.
A memorial gathering for Tom will be held on Saturday, Jan. 8 from noon to 2 p.m. at Nimsgern Funeral Home Chapel in Woodruff with a memorial service at 2 p.m. followed by a reception.
In lieu of flowers, memorials in memory of Tom may be donated to Lower Kaubashine Lake Association for stocking fish.
Online condolences may be shared at www.nimsgernfuneral.com. Nimsgern Funeral & Cremation Services is serving the family.
